On the eve of the 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the scheduled polls have been postponed. The commission in its announcement said the postponement was in the interest of safeguarding Nigeria's democracy. INEC chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, who made the announcement gave an assurance that the commission will by 2pm on Saturday, February 16, meet with stakeholders to elaborate on its decision on the long awaited election. Currently present at the International Conference Centre in Abuja are many international election observers and key INEC officials. Also present is the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, a former minister of aviation, Osita Chidoka. Just like in 2015, history repeated itself today as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Saturday, February 16, 2019 general elections few hours to its commencement. In 2015, INEC under the leadership of Attahiru Jega postponed the Presidential and National Assembly from February 14, 2015 to March 28th, 2015.
