The Constitutional Vandalism In Kogi State Must End Now By Inibehe Effiong

The purported impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Mr Simon Achuba, by the Kogi State House of Assembly and the alleged nomination of one Mr Edward Onoja as his replacement by Governor Yahaya Bello, are acts of constitutional vandalism and a nullity and should be deprecated by all lovers of democracy and adherents of the rule of law. Without much ado, let me say clearly that the futile impeachment proceedings initiated against Mr Achuba by the Kogi State House of Assembly ended by operation of law (automatically) the moment the House received the Report of the seven-man investigation panel dated October 18, 2019 which completely exonerated Mr Achuba of (all) the five allegations of gross misconduct brought against him by the House. Impeachment is not, and can never be deployed as a malignant weapon for insatiable political vendetta. It was not the intention of the framers of the 1999 Constitution to give a House of Assembly omnipotent powers in the process of

Still On Governor Okezie Ikpeazu And That Phone Call By Jude Ndukwe

I have just read what one Churchill Okonkwo wrote about a recorded phone call where an aide of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu was purported to be threatening another man on the phone. The issue, expectedly, has been widely discussed and, sadly, few well known anti-Ikpeazu soldiers have jumped on the bandwagon to use that opportunity to write their usual unsavoury things about the Abia State governor. The target of those, who have been unnecessarily bashing the governor was to pitch him against the public, particularly the media. However, in their short-sightedness and haste to condemn, they forgot to do a background check to ascertain if Governor Ikpeazu has at any time in the last five years he has been governor, threatened, directly or indirectly, any media personnel even though he is arguably the most unfairly criticised and scurrilously attacked governor in the South-East today. The Cat And Mouse Game Of The Nigerian Ports Authority And BUA International Limited By Hannatu Musawa

Something doesn’t smell quite right in the milk. And despite its pungent and piquant nature, this particular feline fiend seems to be impishly and calculatingly lapping it up. For some time now there has been a growing opinion that the Nigerian Ports Authority, a government parastatal under the Ministry of Transport, has been nitpicking at the operations of BUA International Limited, one of the most successful business groups of all time to emerge out of Africa, to the point that it has been expressed in many quarters that the government organisation had been playing a deliberate and cunning cat and mouse game with the international conglomerate. The two organisations have been going at it in and out of the courts in an exchange that looks more like a cat and mouse game with the former taking the shape of the Nigerian Ports Authority and the latter being BUA International Limited. Whether this perception is correct or not, it is left for one to decipher once the facts are

Dele Giwa's Assassination: Nigeria Has Eaten Her Cake! By Erasmus Ikhide

It's exactly 33 years ago today on October 19, 1986 that Dele Giwa was assassinated by IBB's blood-soaked evil regime. It was a dark day, not only for the vanquished nation and journalism, it was pretty much darker for the African race and her primitive inclination for power without responsibility; fraud, vanity and vandalistic mentality as a vampire humanity.  Dele Giwa himself had earlier noted that Nigerians have been shocked to a state of unshockability. In other words, nothing, not even the worst human catastrophe, can shock Nigerians any more. But it would appear that Dele Giwa spoke too soon. Shortly thereafter, the prose maestro himself was dispatched by a novel and spectacular method of public execution. If he had been around in contemporary Nigeria, Dele Giwa, who would have turned seventy plus last July, would have witnessed the infinite capacity of human beings for elaborate suffering stretched to its elastic limit. The limit that we thought was the lim

Nigerian Railway Director Physically Assaults Medical Doctor In Lagos

The Director of Operations, Nigerian Railway Corporation, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Niyi Alli, has physically assaulted a medical practitioner with the Federal Medical Centre, Lagos, Dr Chukwunweike Ojeah, landing him in hospital bed in the process. Information gathered by SaharaReporters indicated that Ojeah had attempted to board a tricycle within the railway compound on Friday night after the close of work when the incident happened. After being almost hit by a Sports Utility Vehicle belonging to Alli and expressing his displeasure at this, he was attacked with a stun gun by the railway director, leading to serious bleeding on his head and nose. It was further gathered that after the physical assault, Alli also invited the police Area Commander, NRC, ACP Alami Adegoke, to arrest Ojeah but the police stayed action after the victim introduced himself as a senior public servant within the railway compound. Following the incident, the FMC management petitioned the Managing Dir

Bayelsa Was Most Expensive Place To Eat Beef, Bread, Rice In September, NBS Reveals

NBS NBS   Bayelsa State was the most expensive place to dine on several staple foods consumed by Nigerians in the month of September.  This is the discovery thrown up by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistic’s Selected Food Price Watch for the ninth month of the year.  The oil-reach state, which has lost most of its farmland and water bodies to petroleum pollution, was the costliest location to buy foods like beef with bone, white garri, all variants of rice studied by NBS with the exception of Ofada, as well as sliced and unsliced bread. Beef with bone in Bayelsa sold for N1,236.31 and only cost N783.81 in Osun State.  Boneless beef was costliest in Delta – N1,506.32 and cheapest in Niger State – 1053.88.  In neighbouring Edo State, a tuber of yam was most expensive, selling for N296.08, while the average in Kwara was less than half the average in the Niger-Delta domain at N109.26.  Another staple food, white garri, which many Nigerians swallow as eba and drink with cold wate

Ethiopia To Grow Three Times Faster Than Nigeria In 2019, Says IMF

The third strongest economy in Africa according to the International Monetary fund – Ethiopia, will grow three times faster than its nearest rival – Nigeria in 2019 the fund believes.  It made this prediction in its regional outlook for the continent on Friday.  The fund expects the Nigerian economy to grow at a rate of 2.3 per cent in 2019 and 2.5 per cent in 2020, while Ethiopia’s will soar by an impressive 7.4 per cent. In what is a warning to Nigeria that it is delaying its long-touted diversification away from oil, the report notes that countries, who are not resource intensive are expected to grow at an average of six per cent this year, which is almost three times faster than the continent’s oil producers and more than twice as fast as other raw material dependent economies.  IMF predicts that the largest economy in Africa – South Africa, will be the most sluggish economy in the continent, growing at a pace of 0.7 per cent in 2019 and 1.1 per cent in 2020.  Gener

Another credit support extended to the power sector is the Nigerian Electricity Market Stabilisation Facility.  The bank committed itself to provide

If Presidency Goes To South-West In 2023, Osinbajo Not Tinubu Will Get My Vote By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo Why are Nigerian politicians ravished by the thought of election? They complot and machinate over it. And when they eventually get into office, they spend four years scheming for another turn instead of honouring their contract with citizens. There is always a blue-print for the next election but a subterfuge for governance and duty. The last general election was held in February, and just eight months after, there are already “crusades and evangelism” ahead of the next one in 2023. How can we make progress this way? We need to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions? Do we keep reprocessing the same class of predators every four years? Do we consider a single term presidency? How do we reduce the cost of elections? Our elections are about the most expensive in the world, with the cost ballooning from about N2bn in 1999 to more than N240bn in 2019, trumping India’s — a country much bigger in size and in population than Nigeria. Really, the argument of form

Teni, Burna Boy, Falz, Rema, Win Big At The Headies 2019 | See Full List

Burna Boy The most anticipated music award, The Headies, has finally come and although ended has left reactions in its trail… as usual. Unfortunately, the award coincided with another big event this year, Starboy Fest , which took place at the O2, London with top Nigerian music stars like Tiwa Savage , Naira Marley, Fireboy DML and many others performing at the Fest, hence couldn’t make it to one of the biggest music awards in Nigeria. Although absent, some of these stars like Burna Boy still got a big win at the Headies with three awards to his name while FalzTheBahdGuy took home three awards and Teni Entertainer winning the highest for the night with wins on Four award categories. Rema who seems to be the youngest in the category didn’t leave empty-handed as he won the Next Rated award  category, defeating top talented acts such as Fireboy DML, Zlatan, Joeboy and Lyta. This year’s Headies was hosted by  Reminisce  and TV presenter and actress,  Nancy Isime.   Here’s th

Meteorological history of Hurricane Patricia

Meteorological history of Hurricane Patricia . Hurricane Patricia set records for the highest maximum sustained winds ever recorded in a tropical cyclone and the second-lowest barometric pressure (after Typhoon Tip of 1979). Originating near the Gulf of Tehuantepec off the Pacific coast of southern Mexico, the system was classified as a tropical depression on October 20, 2015. The next day it became a tropical storm, the twenty-fourth named storm of the 2015 Pacific hurricane season. The following day it grew from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in just 24 hours. The National Hurricane Center ultimately estimated that Patricia attained winds of 215 mph (345 km/h) and a minimum pressure of 872 mbar (hPa; 25.75 inHg). The storm made landfall on October 23 near Cuixmala, Jalisco, in a significantly weakened state, but it was still the strongest recorded hurricane to strike Mexico's Pacific coast, with winds estimated at 150 mph (240 km/h).
