Nigerian Government Accuses El-Zakzaky Of Demanding ‘Special’ Treatment In India

The Nigerian Government on Wednesday accused the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, of demanding to check into a five-star hotel and wanting to receive visitors of all kinds in India. The popular religious leader was flown to India on Monday for medical treatment following an order by a Kaduna court directing the state government to release him from detention to attend to his failing health. In a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Isu Gekpe, El-Zakzaky’s demands were rejected because he went to India only for medical purpose and not tourism. The statement read, “In addition, El-Zakzaky demanded free movement and access to visitors of all kinds as well as requested to be allowed to check into a five-star hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.  “The request was refused on the ground that he came into the country for medicals and not as a tourist (more so that his visa was issued on medi

Ahead of the governorship election in Ondo State next year, about 16 aspirants have indicated interest to represent the Peoples Democratic Party during that exercise. NECA Warns Of Food Smuggling Following FOREX Ban On Imports

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association on Wednesday warned that there would be unprecedented smuggling of food products following a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari’s that the Central Bank of Nigeria should no longer make foreign exchange available for food importation. Director-General of NECA, Mr Timothy Olawale, told journalists in Lagos that even though the directive was done in good faith, it will create more problems at the end and lead to increased smuggling through the country’s porous land borders. Olawale said Nigeria currently lacked the capacity to meet its local food demand, adding that this will lead to corruption and smuggling into the country. President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he will assign portfolios and swear in new ministers that will make up his cabinet during his second term in office. The President made the announcement in a tweet on Wednesday via his official Twitter handle @MBuhari. He added that portfolios will be assigned with clear implementation targets to ensure the performance of the incoming ministers.   South African-born Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, has said that she has “never really felt very supported” by other women in sport, according to a report by the BBC. The 28-year-old, who is preparing to defend her world 800m title in Qatar in September, while speaking at a women’s conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, said that on many occasions she had felt deserted by women. She said, “I'm targeted because I'm undefeated. Since I have been in sport, I have never really felt very supported, I've never felt recognised mostly by women. “I'm the best at what I do.   Thousands of heartbroken fans of late Ivory Coast musician, DJ Arafat, have signed an online petition asking the country’s Ministry of Culture to use their biggest stadium to hold his funeral service.
