The Kimpact Development Initiative has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigeria Police Force to swiftly prosecute electoral offenders in the just concluded governorship election in Bayelsa State. KDI said this while presenting its Nigeria Election Violence Report for the Bayelsa State governorship election held on November 16. The group urged government to set up a special court to ensure the prosecution of electoral offenders. Ganduje Rejects Court Ruling, Vows To Continue Dealing With Sacked Monarchs

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has rejected the ruling of a Kano High Court, which sacked four emirs he recently appointed. Justice Usman Na’Abba had in a ruling on Thursday dissolved the four new first-class emirates, stating that the law creating them did not follow due process. SaharaReporters had exclusively reported how Ganduje planned and executed a three-step plan to oust Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, and disintegrate the Kano emirate, which had been around for centuries over a personal feud. Ganduje in a statement by the Commissioner for Information in the state, Mallam Muhammad Garba, said the state was studying the ruling of the court on the creation of four new emirates with a view to taking immediate appropriate action. He posited that the government will not fold its arms and concede such constitutional power in the interest of the well-being of the people and general development of the state. The statement said, “Despite the ruling, t...

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, disclosed this in an interview with journalists after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee in Abuja. Reports had suggested that Jonathan might face internal party sanctions for what looked like his support for the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, who eventually emerged winner of the governorship elections. But debunking that notion, Ologbondiyan said, “The issue of former President Goodluck Jonathan did not come up at the meeting and it was not discussed. “You must know about the procedure and processes in our party. If we do not have a report or an issue before us, we cannot delve into. “As we speak now, we do not have any matter concerning Jonathan before us in the party.” Ologbondiyan said that the only issue di...

Governors Oppose Death Penalty For Hate Speech

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum has opposed death penalty for hate speech and asked the National Assembly to conduct a public hearing on the proposed bill to aggregate the views of citizens. The Senate had on Tuesday last week introduced the hate speech bill, which among others, prescribed death by hanging as punishment for certain categories of offenders. The NGF Vice Chairman and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on Thursday said due process should be followed.  When asked whether the governors backed death penalty for hate speech, Tambuwal said, “I’m not sure I have heard any governor coming out to say he is in support of death penalty for hate speech. “I believe the National Assembly should hold a public hearing on that bill so that due process of lawmaking is followed, so that the views of Nigerians not just the governors will be well captured. "That bill should respect the views of Nigerians in whatever may be the direction of debate and the eventua...

According to Abdullahi, who commended President Muhammadu Buhari for not bowing to pressure to open Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries, those clamouring for its reopening were smugglers and all those profiting from the bastardisation of the economy. He said, “Our neighbouring countries have become gateways and transit routes for all manners of commodities ranging from automobiles to foodstuffs such as rice, corns, sorghum, palm oil, tomatoes, eggs and dairy products. “Republic of Benin became one of the world’s top importers of rice because of its Nigerian market. Almost all of the rice it imported from Thailand, Indonesia etc found its way to Nigeria through the Seme Border. ‘”We therefore stand with this government in sup...
