COVID-19: Groups Decry Rising Unemployment, Call For Increased Investment In Akwa Ibom, Others

Two youth organisations in Akwa Ibom State, Afe Mkparawa Annang and Supreme Council of Ibibio Youths, have decried the rising levels of unemployment across Nigeria, calling for more investments to open up local economies to empower more households and individuals. According to the groups, the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic has further escalated things, piling pressure on the economy and leading to thousands of job losses for many Nigerians. While commending a Turkish investor, Mr Onur Kumral, whose companies – Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Limited, and Kings Flour Mill Limited – the groups said had created employment for many young people in Nigeria, Afe Mkparawa Annang and Supreme Council of Ibibio Youths said the Nigerian Government must create an enabling environment for more foreign investors to bring their money into the country and help reduce the unemployment index by creating jobs. PDP Candidate, Jegede, Accuses Governor Akeredolu Of Arrogance, Says APC Won’t Rule Forever

Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, has described Governor Rotimi Akeredolu as “arrogant” for saying the All Progressives Congress would rule the state forever.  Akeredolu had on Tuesday in Akure, the state capital, at a public function said members of the APC needed to work harder so that the party can continue to rule the state forever.  The governor also added that it was not the turn of the Central Senatorial District where Jegede hails from to produce a governor, saying the district should wait for the next 12 years. Mompha Regains Freedom, Drops Suit Against EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has released suspected cyber fraudster, Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, about two weeks after he was rearrested by the anti-graft agency in Lagos, a report by PUNCH said. His lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), confirmed his release on bail on Wednesday. Oyewole added that Mompha had withdrawn the N5m fundamental rights suit he filed against the EFCC to challenge his rearrest. Mompha, who is answering N32bn fraud charges before the Federal High Court in Lagos, was rearrested on August 14 when he went to the EFCC office in Ikoyi, Lagos, to reclaim his five wristwatches, one Apple Air pod, one iPhone 8 mobile phone and one pair of sunglasses, seized from him by the anti-graft agency since last year. His visit to the EFCC office followed a July 24 ruling by Justice Mohammed Liman ordering the release of the items to him. Nigerian Government Approves N722.3m For Forensic Audit Of NDDC

The Federal Executive Council has approved N722.3m for the forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed this on Wednesday after the virtual FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. According to Akpabio, the field auditors will undertake a complete forensic exercise of the NDDC activities in their respective states of assignments and ascertain total funds and resources paid to contractors for all projects. They would also compare the total amount of resources expended with the value of what was delivered to the commission and establish if such value is commensurate with the resources expended. Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity As President Buhari Approves Implementation Of New Tariff

President Muhammadu Buhari has finally approved the official implementation of cost-reflective tariffs for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. The new tariff, which will now formally commence on September 1, 2020, was one of the preconditions given by the World Bank for a $1.5bn loan for Nigeria. Other preconditions include the removal of fuel subsidy and unification of exchange rate, which the Central Bank of Nigeria is implementing. In January, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had announced that there would be an upward review of electricity tariffs across the country from April 1. However, this was suspended after reports indicated that electricity distribution companies had pushed for a postponement until key areas of disagreement were sorted. President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the slow pace of court trials in Nigeria was one of the areas that must be urgently reformed for the sustenance of law and order. Speaking at the 60th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, Buhari, who recalled how it took so long for the courts to decide and eventually dismiss the election petitions he filed to challenge his losses in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential polls, declared that the Nigerian justice system needed urgent reform. Residents of Obogoro community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State are now living in fear due to the threat of erosion in the area. The gully erosion has encroached on houses, churches, schools and other open lands, forcing many persons to abandon the area. NUPENG Suspends Planned Nationwide Strike As Chevron Recalls Retrenched Workers

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has suspended its planned nationwide strike scheduled for Thursday, August 27, after Chevron Nigeria Limited and its contractors agreed to immediately unconditionally recall 175 workers retrenched last week. Pandemonium In Lagos As Task Force Official Kill Commercial Bus Driver, Conductor

For more than two hours, there were tense scenes in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State after members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed with officials of Lagos State Task Force. The incident followed the killings of a commercial bus driver and conductor by task force officials for yet to be ascertained reasons. Nigerian University Lecturers Urges Government To Reopen Tertiary Institutions

The Nigerian Government has been asked to reopen tertiary institutions in the country by lecturers under the umbrella of Congress of University Academic, a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. This was made known by the congress through a statement on Wednesday after its National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja. The statement reads, “The meeting called on the government to reopen universities as soon as possible as CONUA members are ready to resume work while lecturers urged FG to reopen universities as soon as possible. “CONUA further stated that the education sector cannot continue to stagnate, as it appears that COVID-19 would continue to be a threat and we must, in the circumstance, learn to strive to lead our normal life.” The congress also condemned alleged intimidation and harassment of some of its members by “some university administrations and some other unions within the universities”.
