South Africa: Country Still Has Choices as COVID-19 Impacts On Poverty and Income

[ISS] Presenting South Africa's budget vote in Parliament on 26 February, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni forecast that the country would grow by 0.9% in 2020 and at an average of just over 1% for the next three years. Global economic growth would come in at 3.3% for 2020, in line with the October 2019 International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast. 72 Convicts Released In Kaduna To Curtail Spread Of Coronavirus

Some 72 convicts were on Tuesday set free by the Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as part of measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the state and country at large. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Aisha Dikko, revealed that 69 of the convicts were released from Kaduna Correctional Centre while three were freed from the prison in Kafanchan. Following the outbreak of the pandemic, countries are putting their vaccination programme for measles and other diseases on hold to face the COVID-19 outbreak, according to the AFP. Currently, 24 countries, including several already dealing with large measles outbreaks, have suspended widespread vaccinations, the World Health Organisation and UNICEF said. The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, has confirmed the result of his second test for Coronavirus.  Babandede, who tested positive to the virus earlier, confirmed on Tuesday that he has tested negative twice to the virus after self-isolating. In statement, NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, said that news of Babandede testing negative twice after self-isolation came as a great relief. COVID-19: WARIF Records 64 Per Cent Increase In Sexual Abuse Cases During 14-day Lockdown

Women at Risk International Foundation has recorded a 64 per cent increase in sexual abuses during the 14-day lockdown of Lagos, Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory mandated by President Muhammadu Buhari to help curb the spread of COVID-19. WARIF, an organisation focused on reducing the prevalence of gender-based violence in Nigeria, urged all affected adults and caregivers of young children to make use of its 24-hour confidential help line to report any case of sexual abuse or attempted sexual abuse. Founder of WARIF, Dr Kemi Da-Silvia Ibru, added that safety measures have been put in place to prevent cross-contamination between survivors, who visit the centre.  She also said that WARIF has provided personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of its frontline workers. After Visiting 118,000 Households, We Identified 119 Persons With COVID-19 Symptoms –Lagos Government

  The Lagos State Government said its officials have visited 118,000 households in the state over the last two days and identified 119 persons with COVID-19 symptoms.  Commissioner for Health in the state, Prof Akin Abayomi, made the disclosure at a briefing with journalists on Tuesday. Abayomi said the community search was activated to limit the spread of the disease in the state, which so far has the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the country. He said, “We’ve embarked on an active case search in communities. The idea is to go to hot spots and go from door to door with our health personnel.  “So far, in the last two days, we’ve visited 118,000 households and we’re looking for the typical symptoms of COVID-19. We’ve identified about 119 people who have the symptoms that are suggestive of COVID-19. “But let me remind you that COVID is one of the viruses that can cause respiratory symptoms.
