Bandits Kill Foreigner Abducted In Niger State

A foreign contractor abducted in Niger State has been killed by suspected bandits less than 24 hours in captivity. The unnamed victim was kidnapped on Monday together with a Nigerian between Yankila and Regina villages in Rafi Local Government Area of the state. Adamu Usman, Commissioner of Police in the state, in a statement on Tuesday said the body of the victim was recovered by the police in a bush in Pangu Gari, Gunna district of Rafi Local Government Area. Usman said the corpse had been conveyed by the police to Minna General Hospital for autopsy, while investigation was in progress. “They have not informed the command of their operations in the state. We only knew their presence in the state due to this incident,” he said. African Union Condemns Arrest Of Mali President By Military

The African Union has condemned the arrest of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse by mutineering soldiers in Mali. Condemning the arrest of the country’s leader, Moussa Faki Mahamat, former Prime Minister of Chad and Chairperson of the African Union Commission, demanded the immediate release of Keita and Cisse. Ondo Police Arrest Kidnapper Who Fled Gombe State After Abducting Driver

Masaudu Mohammed, a member of a notorious kidnap syndicate, who fled Gombe State after he abducted a commercial driver, has been arrested in Ondo State.  Mohammed was nabbed by the police in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.  Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Salami Bolaji, confirmed the arrest of the suspect on Tuesday in Akure.  Bolaji said the suspect and his gang had also been involved in some armed robbery operations in Gombe State before he fled to Ondo where he was finally caught.  He explained that the suspect had recently robbed one Aminu Idris, a driver of a Hummer bus with registration number Gombe: NFD 591 XA, and also kidnapped him. 774,000 Jobs: Nigerian Lawmakers Want More Slots Allotted To Them

Lawmakers in the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives have demanded more slots to be given to them in the Special Public Work programme of the Nigerian Government. The works programme being supervised by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, is to employ 1,000 low-skilled persons from every local government in the country. Nigerian politicians have, however, ceded to themselves a chunk of the allocation. SaharaReporters had reported that slots had been allocated to politicians, youth groups, National Union of Road Transport Workers as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria with political office holders allocated 15 per cent of the slots in the programme. Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday charged the police in the state to ensure the rearrest of Sunday Shodipe, a notorious serial killer, who escaped from custody in Ibadan, the capital, on Saturday. The governor gave the order in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Taiwo Adisa, stating that his administration placed a high premium on security of lives and properties in the state. The statement reads, “All of us have followed the incidents in Akinyele; the arrest of the principal suspect in the case and of course his escape from custody after being arraigned in court. “Yes, the people have the right having suffered such pains to come out to protest. Shots have been heard at an army base in Kati, outside Bamako, amid an ongoing political crisis in Mali, DW reports. The situation remains unclear but news of the gunshots quickly sparked fears of a possible coup attempt. According to nearby witnesses, soldiers fired gunshots into the air at a military base in Kati, a town 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Bamako, though it remained unclear who was firing at whom. The Norwegian Embassy gave a clear message to its citizens: “The embassy has been notified of a mutiny in the Armed Forces and troops are on their way to Bamako. International Youth Day 2020: A Demography Dancing On Cliff By Opeyemi Oriniowo

Last week was the commemoration of yet another international youth day. Notably marked on August 7, 2020 with this year’s theme being “Youth Engagement for Global Action” as projected by the United Nations for all member countries. This year’s theme sought to highlight the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced. For some reasons I did not share the usual optimism and comradeship with other young people the day had connoted for me in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, this had nothing to do with COVID-19 not enabling physical gatherings for events or other fanfares that normally accompany the day.
