UN Chief Says Climate Change Fuelling Crisis In Nigeria, Mali, Others

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, on Monday, said that worsening climate conditions is fuelling competition for shrinking resources in the Sahel region of Africa, which includes Northern Nigeria. Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, at the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council, Bachelet said climate change will have a telling impact on the political, economic and socio-cultural fabric of the world. N3.84trn Shared by Federal, States, LGs In Six Months –NEITI

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative has said that the Federal Government, states and local governments across the country received a total of N3.84trn as allocations between January and June 2019. In a statement by NEITI’s Director, Communications and Advocacy, Orji Orji, it was disclosed that the Federal Government received N1.599trn, the 36 states got N1.335trn while the 774 local government areas of the country shared N792bn during the period under review. The FAAC disbursement of N3.84trn for the first half of 2019 was slightly lower than the N3.94trn disbursed during the same period in 2018 but higher than the N2.78trn disbursed in the first half of 2017. On a quarter on quarter basis, the second quarter of 2019 was the lowest since the fourth quarter of 2017. The surge in the demand for locally milled rice is an offshoot of President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that Nigeria’s borders with Benin and Niger republics be closed to prevent the smuggling of rice into the country. One Killed, Seven Students Injured In Bauchi-Jos Road Accident

File photo One person has been reportedly killed in a road accident along Bauchi-Jos Road in Miri Village following a collision between a commercial vehicle and a car, according to The Nation. The incident occurred on Monday and left seven students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, severely injured. Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi Sector Command, Rilwan Sulaiman, confirmed the tragedy. He said the car was conveying students of ATBU to Bauchi before colliding with the empty commercial vehicle. Rilwan revealed that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital. Professors In Ondo Tertiary Institutions Now To Retire At 70

A new bill passed into law by the Ondo State House of Assembly has pegged the retirement age of professors in tertiary institutions at 70. The bill also put the retirement age of other teaching and non- teaching staff at 65. Spokesperson for the Assembly, Sehinde Fanokun, disclosed this through a statement in Akure, the state capital, on Monday. He stressed that the executive bill, which has become a law, would take effect immediately. Fanokun said beneficiaries of the amended law would now include workers in state-owned tertiary institutions. It was gathered that lecturers in Federal universities had been enjoying this privilege for long, hence the move by the Ondo Assembly for those in the state’s tertiary institutions to also benefit from such initiative. Xenophobia: Eight Policemen Arraigned For Maltreating Nigerians –Dabiri-Erewa

Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said that the South African Government had arraigned eight policemen for maltreating Nigerians in that country. Dabiri-Erewa made the disclosure during a programme on Channels Television. She said, “Eight policemen have been charged to court by South Africa. They have been charged for cases involving the maltreatment of Nigerians in South Africa that have been on for a long time. But the cases have not yet ended. “We are hoping those cases will end. There have to be consequences for actions. Stop IMN Planned Procession, IGP Orders Police Commissioners

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered Commissioners of Police across the country including the Federal Capital Territory to prevent a planned procession by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria from taking place. The IMN, led by Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, had announced on Sunday that its yearly Ashura procession scheduled for Tuesday would go as planned despite warnings by the police for it to be halted. In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, the IGP said that the activities of IMN remains illegal and will be treated as such. Six Persons Kidnapped On Kaduna-Abuja Highway

Gunmen Gunmen Some gunmen have abducted six persons on the Kaduna-Abuja highway. Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna Police Command, DSP Yakubu Sabo, said the sad event took place on Sunday evening. The latest incident follows the killing of three suspected kidnappers and the arrest of 26 others by the police on the Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna Zaria expressway barely 24 hours ago. Sabo revealed that the hoodlums dressed in military uniform, intercepted a commercial bus around 11:40pm on Sunday near Rijana Village and whisked the six persons away. Eight foreign-trained graduates have been denied registration over their inabilities to defend their degrees, the National Youth Service Corps Coordinator in Kano State, Ladan Baba, revealed on Monday. He made the disclosure during the passing out parade of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ Corps members from the three-week orientation course, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. He was the 17th governor of Kentucky, and represented the state in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He also served as United States Attorney General in the administrations of William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore. Lame duck president John Quincy Adams nominated Crittenden to the U.S. Supreme Court on December 17, 1828, but supporters of president-elect Andrew Jackson in the Senate voted to allow Jackson to make his own nomination. While serving in the Senate in December 1860, he authored the Crittenden Compromise, a series of resolutions and constitutional amendments he hoped would avert the Civil War, but Congress would not approve them. One of his sons, George B. Crittenden, became a general in the Confederate Army. Another son, Thomas Leonidas Crittenden, became a general in the Union Army.
