UN Advises Nigerian Government To Support Independent Media, Not Stifle It

Ronald Kayanja The United Nations has asked the Nigerian Government to adapt a supportive stance towards independent media as a means of combating fake news. This advice goes contrary to the Nigerian Government’s policy of muscling the media through fines and threatening to regulate the social media space. Ronald Kayanja Director, United Nations Information Centre in Nigeria, Ronald Kayanja, shared his counsel at a virtual meeting to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on Monday. “One way to fight fake news and hate speech which is pervasive through digital media is to strengthen the independent media. Let Someone Tell Malami That Enough Is Enough Please By Usman Okai Austin

Usman Okai Austin I read with a putrid feeling of nausea and utter shame a statement credited to the Hon Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, wherein he was quoted to have said it was possible that hoodlums dressed in army fatigues could have been responsible for the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate during the recent #EndSARS protests. Not only was such statement by a legal expert and high ranking government official tasked with unravelling the identities of those behind the unfortunate incident pre-emptive, it also amounts to the brazen and shameless lies coupled with the odious shenanigans of official ‘yes’ men in and around corridors of power in our country. In a civilized clime, the nation’s number one law maker should have resigned by now. There is no doubt that Mr Malami has already arrived at the outcome of the investigation he is to conduct on the incident even before he and his team commenced their job. Usman Okai Austin Nigeri

WTO: The Politics Against The Emergence Of Okonjo-Iweala As DG By Olubunmi Akamo

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala The country, United States of America, has grown its tentacles so big among countries of the world that its stand on international organisations has effect in both the funding and recognition of such agencies. It became a huge blow for the United Nations specialised agency, World Health Organisation (WHO), when President Donald Trump moved to withdraw US participation from the agency, sometime in July. Although the President claimed conspiracy theory between WHO and China for downplaying the destructive effect of COVID-19, the remote cause has been the fierce economic battle between China and US. Trump believed China initiated the virus to bring a setback to the then booming US economy. Howbeit she was voted to be the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) by 163 out of 164 members of the trade organisation, the US Trade Representative discredit the candidature of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to give credence to the candidature of Yoo Myung-hee, her
