Africa: Countries Aren't Borrowing Too Much - They're Paying Too Much for Debt

[The Conversation Africa] There is renewed concern about the sustainability of rising debt levels in many African countries. Much of this debt is being incurred through foreign currency denominated Eurobonds issued on international financial markets. The total value of Eurobonds issued between 2018 and 2019 was more than the value of all bonds sold between 2003 to 2016. via LATEST NEWS

DCLM Daily Manna – When Challenges Arise

Topic: When Challenges Arise [DCLM Daily Manna 20 February 2020 Daily Devotional by Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi] Text:  John 12:27-50 27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. 30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35 Then Jesus said unto the

Nigeria Is Governable: Systems, Structures And Small Sense By Rachael Onamusi

Nigeria is governable. With willpower, the country can be productive and progressive. Justifying stagnation and regression by lecturing about the complexities of our nation, and waxing lyrical about the divisiveness of tribal and religious differences is just verbal sleight of hand, a deflection from padded agbadas, irresponsible borrowing and financial malfeasance.  Systems and structures are the foundations of governance and development. Without them, cities crumble and anarchy reigns. When you add deprivation and oppression as wilful tools of control, you get Nigeria.  The people we call ungovernable are only ungovernable on our shores. On more than one occasion, I have witnessed anonymous, conforming Nigerian travellers who queue at San Francisco Airport and wait patiently on their stopover at JFK, only to suddenly remember their name and status the second they arrive at Murtala Muhammad Airport. Agitated shrieks of “Do you know who I am?” fill the air in their righteous

NPower Beneficiaries Threaten To Embark On Strike Over Non-payment Of Allowances

Beneficiaries of the NPower teaching scheme have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the non-payment of January allowances. The issue of non-payment of allowances was once again a matter of national discourse after a similar incident occurred in October 2019 when beneficiaries were not paid for three months. SaharaReporters had reported that since the social investment programme of the Nigerian Government was moved to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, the minister, Sadiya Farouq, had been making attempts to stop some of the programmes under the scheme. Aside from announcing that beneficiaries would be laid off, she has also refused to release funds for the school feeding programme in some states. The beneficiaries under National Association Of Npower Volunteers said that they would no longer hesitate to embark on a strike action if their allowances were not paid. The beneficiaries are also asking for the immediate resignation of Far

Ashcan comic

Ashcan comic . An ashcan comic is a type of American comic book originally created solely to establish trademarks on potential titles and not intended for sale. It was developed by publishers including All-American Publications (logo pictured) and Fawcett Comics to gain legal protection for desirable titles. An ashcan comic was the same size as a regular comic book and usually had a black and white cover. The practice became common in the 1930s and 1940s when the comic book industry was in its infancy, but was phased out after updates to US trademark law. The term "ashcan" was revived in the 1980s by Bob Burden, who applied it to prototypes of his self-published comic book. Since the 1990s, the term has been used to describe promotional materials produced in large print runs and made available for mass consumption. In the film and television industries, the term has been adopted for low-grade material created to preserve a claim to licensed property rights.

Group Warns Nigerians To Beware Of Human Traffickers Online

Nigerians have been urged to be conscious of the activities of human traffickers operating online via social media, mobile apps and other online platforms. The Migrant Project gave this advice while noting that human traffickers whose interest is to exploit women, men and children through forced labour and commercial sex, now recruit unsuspecting persons online, often via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Dating Sites, amongst others. Recall that SaharaReporters had published an article in January revealing how a Facebook user tricked people into releasing their children to be trafficked into slavery. Tayo Elegbede, Media Lead at The Migrant Project, said that the organisation had noticed a disturbing rise in the modus operandi of human traffickers. He noted that predators posed online either as travel agents with enticing deals, recruitment agencies with job offers or as lovers via dating sites and social media platforms, who would build trust before unleashing their inhum

Akerele-Ogunsiji, who spoke at an event in Lagos, also lamented that the funds budgeted for education, infrastructure and other humanitarian needs of the country was not enough.  She said Nigeria has been so backward that the leadership was fighting a supremacy battle over Amotekun when countries were already fighting security issues with drones, satellites and robots. She said  “Nigeria is backward educationally but our hovernors are fighting the Presidency over Amotekun when countries of the world including neighbouring Ghana are already using drones, robotics and other technology borne out of research to fight insecurity.” The social entrepreneur urged Nigerian students to challenge the older generation by de

Lawmakers Doing Enormous Work Behind Camera, Pay Justified —Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that contrary to popular perception in the country, members of the National Assembly were working. Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said this during the launch of Green Chamber Magazine, a publication of the House of Representatives in Abuja on Wednesday. He said, “Hitherto, the public perception of the National Assembly is that of a bicameral legislature where overly comfortable and highly overpaid members merely stuff wads of currency notes into their pockets for little work done.  “This wrong perception has resulted partly from the lack of understanding of the enormous work of lawmakers, especially outside the glare of television cameras. “In addition, it will help the house to tell its own story, rather than relying on others to take charge of their narrative.  “It is said that no one can tell your story better than you. This magazine is long overdue. But like the saying goes, it’s better

According to Adeyemi, the proliferation of small arms and weapons is a phenomenon responsible for destabilising the peace, development and threatening the national security of some countries in Africa. Noting that the local root cause of conflicts are numerous and diverse, Adeyemi, however, said that in all local conflicts, the diffusion of illegal arms and weapons of terror has played a decisive role in the escalation and intensification of these conflicts.
