Distilling The Truth… By Dele Farotimi

Dele Farotimi “Femi Fani Kayode is my boy. Give him food, he will praise you and sing for you”  Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. 30/8/2018.  “Tell the truth, and let the devil be ashamed!”  Dele Farotimi These were the refrains of Mr Adewole, Vice Principal of my secondary school, and the one designated its Chief Administrator of the venerable “pankere”. The flexible cane, made of the branches of some evil tree, that wouldn’t snap as other canes, and has the evil characteristics of wrapping itself around the back, buttocks, or wherever it pleases its wielder, to direct its attention. His admonition would ring out above the anguish and terror, of the ungrateful recipient of his mastery of his craft.  The pankere is a weapon of brain reset, and Mr Adewole was a master craftsman in its use. He might administer only six of the very best, but you need have no doubt as to the trueness of his aim: all shall land on the same spot, and each would be accompanied by the refrain, “tell the trut

Nigerian Students Reject Petrol Price Increment, Ask Buhari To Resign

The National Association of Nigerian Students (Zone D) on Wednesday rejected the new pump price of petrol announced by the Nigerian Government from N148 to N151.56k per liter. Kowe Odunayo Amos, Coordinator of NANS (Zone D), in a statement described the increment as punishment to Nigerians given the prevailing economic hardship in the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The students’ body asked President Muhammadu Buhari and his cabinet members to reverse the pump price or resign. The statement reads, “We find it most embarrassing to read of the increment in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N163. This is in addition to the 300% increment in electricity tariff. It is on record that this same President Buhari and his anti-people government increased stamp duty; devalued the Naira to the extent that a dollar is almost N500 now. “No doubt, this government has worsened all the crises it has inherited from the last administration. In fact, the Buhari government is a

Nigeria Correctional Service Blames Open Treasury Portal For Incomplete Transaction Data

Austin Njoku, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), has blamed Open Treasury Portal for the omission of payment details in the transactions recently conducted by the organisation. Njoku made the assertion in response to an earlier story by SaharaReporters which showed that the prison service was one of the 32 agencies that had failed to describe the details of about N9 billion transactions on the Open Treasury portal maintained by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF).  The Civic Media Lab had discovered at least 213 transactions in the portal between April and May that did not contain any descriptions of what the payments were meant for. The data showed that the prison service made 41 payments to 36 companies without stating the purpose of payment. Njoku, however, said the service has high accounting standards and should not be blamed for the omission. See Also Corruption Agencies Omit Purpose Of Payments In Transactions W

Blasphemy: Free Umar Farouq Now By Leo Igwe

Leo Igwe While efforts are being made to save the life of a 22-year-old Muslim singer, Yahaya Aminu-Sharif, who was sentenced to death for blasphemy, the world should not forget Umar Farouq. The international community should pressure the governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, to free this 13-year-old boy from prison because he committed no crime. Like Aminu-Sharif, Farouk was accused of blasphemy and tried in a sharia court. While Yahaya was prosecuted for insulting Prophet Muhammad, Farouq was convicted for insulting the Islamic god. Yahaya was sentenced to death while Farouq was given a 10-year prison sentence. Now, a lot has been said about the death sentence on Yahaya, but there has not been enough focus on the outrageous prison sentence of Umar Farouq. There is no move to appeal and get the sentence overturned. Now does that mean this boy will spend the next ten years in jail? Let us take a closer look at Farouq’s case. Leo Igwe According to the news report, Farouq m

Of Weaponising Anger And Cultic Following By Osmund Agbo

I met a young Nigerian the other day at the gym dripping with passion about Biafra. Oh wait, let me take that back. I met a young Biafran. I had to rephrase that statement out of respect for my friend who would rather identify as a Biafran and liked to be addressed as such. Few months ago, Chinedu and I met at the local gym in my neighborhood of Eagle Springs. As with most of us in the Diaspora, you could spot a Nigerian from a distance. But Chinedu’s case was different. He was working out close by me when a call came in from Nigeria. Before long, he was screaming on top of his lung, totally oblivious of anyone else. His behaviour would be textbook for the most part, if you were to ask my wife. I suspect that someone had called from Nigeria ostensibly to request for some kind of endless ‘support’.  My friend was a totally jacked up fella whose passion for fitness could only be rivaled by his commitment to the Biafran cause. Within minutes of our conversation, he delved straight into
