Bus Collides With Canadian Prime Minister’s Aircraft

Justin Trudeau’s re-election bid suffered a setback on Thursday when a bus carrying journalists collided with his campaign plane at a whistlestop in westernmost Canada, forcing him to fly a loaner, AFP reports. According to reporters travelling with the Canadian Prime Minister, the collision occurred shortly after landing in Victoria late on Wednesday on the first leg of a cross-country tour. The media bus drove under and scraped the wing of the plane. “There were no injuries and the damage to the plane is being assessed,” Liberal spokeswoman, Eleanore Catenaro, told AFP. The mishap, she added, would not affect Trudeau’s busy schedule, which included campaign stops in Kamloops and Edmonton this week.   Travel News AddThis :  Original Author :  SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :  from All Content via

This followed a fierce battle between the troops and Boko Haram insurgents, who were said to have planned a massive attack in the axis. It gathered that the soldiers were ambushed by the terrorists in a village called Granda, engaging them overnight from Monday until the early hours of Tuesday. The troops were said to be closely supported with air warfare by the Air Component of the Operation Lafiya Dole. Sources, however, said some of the soldiers later fled, leading to the overpowering of the military base during which nine soldiers got killed in battle, according to Channels Television. They added that seven out of the fallen soldiers were slaughtered as the insurgents beat a retreat. The bodies of the slain soldiers have since been evacuated and deposited at the military hospital in Maiduguri, the Borno

Climate Change: Kano Government Recruits 100 Forest Guards

The Kano State Government has recruited 100 forest guards to stem the destruction of the state’s forests and enhance security. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Tukur Getso, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Kano. Getso explained that the government was concerned about the destruction of vegetation in the state and was doing everything possible to arrest the trend. He noted that it was important to maintain vegetation cover as safeguard to the effects of climate change. In this respect, the permanent secretary said the state “has gone far in the establishment of a state-owned hydroelectricity power supply company which is expected to produce 23 megawatt targeted at reducing consumption of petroleum products.” He added that by reducing the demand for petroleum products, the green house gaseous emission would drastically reduce in the state. Getso noted that the decongestion of road traffic by Kano R

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that he congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal confirmed his election because it was better to offer public congratulations than visit him at night. Wike, according to a report by PUNCH, said that unlike some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, who visit President Buhari at night, he made his declaration public because it came from his heart. The Rivers governor made the statement while speaking at the funeral service of Madam Blessing Awuse, mother of one of PDP leaders in the state, Sergeant Awuse, held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Emohua, on Thursday. He said, “I am sure all of you are surprised that I congratulated Buhari. “Is it not good for me to congratulate him than to go to his house in the night? “Many PDP governors go to see him in his house in the night. I have never gone and I will not go. I won’t go. “We are the only state that the Federal Government

When Cows Compete With Students For Space In Ivory Towers By Olabisi Deji-Folutile

When countries around the globe are busy thinking of how to build world class universities that will have positive impacts on their societies, it is unfortunate that some universities in Nigeria could still be burdened with the task of keeping cows away from their classrooms. Sometimes, stories about happenings in Nigeria are just unbelievable. Or, how can anyone fathom a cry for help by a university to curtail cattle invasion of its premises?  This is pure tragedy especially now that many universities are working on attracting more funds   to embark on cutting-edge researches that will create solutions to world’s challenges. It is bad enough that higher institutions in the country are confronted with myriads of challenges occasioned by either maladministration or paucity of funding. To now add the problem of competing with cows for space in a university environment is one problem too many. The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, had on T

I Appoint Women To Head Finance Ministry For Inclusivity, Says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he appoints women to lead the finance sector in order to ensure effective management of limited resources available and promote a stronger sense of inclusiveness. The President said this while receiving a delegation of women leaders of the All Progressives Congress from across the country. Buhari had appointed two women consecutively to lead the Ministry of Finance after picking Kemi Adeosun and Zainab Ahmed. He said he preferred women to oversee the economic and financial hub of the country as they can readily deploy their experience in aligning resources with the needs of the country. He added that Nigeria had many female technocrats with local and international experiences on economy and finance. Buhari said, “I am happy that I can defend myself very effectively on this issue. The APC party leader is my witness. Since the coming into power of this administration, I have handed over the treasury to women. “Even at the househol

Brexit: UK Needs Skilled Labour From Africa – Nigerian Graduate

A Nigerian graduate, who was mandated to return home after his master’s programme in Scotland, United Kingdom, has said that the two-year window recently announced for foreign students to stay back after their studies and secure jobs, was a strategy to get skilled labour from Africa. Umeh, who obtained a master’s degree from the University of Dundee, said he found no opportunity when he returned to Nigeria. He said, “I came back to Nigeria, I didn’t find a single opportunity.” Former Prime Minister, Teresa May, had created a policy in 2012 that terminated the stay of foreign students four months after their degree programme ended. But with Britain’s exit from the European Union gathering pace, her successor, Boris Johnson, is determined to reverse that rule to boost UK’s workforce. “But, you cannot look at that issue without looking at Brexit. Brexit so far, has been a total disaster. “The way it is going, they need skilled labour, cheap skilled labour. And where can t

Red Cross To Develop Finance Mechanism Schemes For North-East, Others

The International Committee of the Red Cross on Thursday said that it would develop five to 10 finance mechanism schemes in conflict ridden areas around the globe beginning with the North-Eastern region of Nigeria. President of the organisation, Peter Maurer, said this would reduce the dependence on aid convoys, Reuters reports. “With longer, more protracted conflicts, we need to give people income opportunities. “Even if they are in refugee camps, even if they are in internally displaced person camps, they want to do something.” The plan would see the Red Cross pair financing schemes to projects in violence-prone areas. Maurer said Nigeria’s cash-rich businesses and violent habitats makes it a healthy ground for the experiment.  News AddThis :  Original Author :  SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :  from All Content via

$9.8bn Judgment: Nigerian Demands AGF’s Resignation Within Seven Days

Abubakar Malami Abubakar Malami   Executive Director of Centre for Public Accountability, Olufemi Lawson, has asked Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to resign within seven days over the $9.8bn judgment against the Federal Government of Nigeria for breach of contract involving Process and Industrial Development Limited. Lawson, in an open letter to the AGF, expressed his disappointment at Malami’s show of incompetence at how he handled the court processes. He also knocked the AGF for not taking necessary steps when President Muhammadu Buhari's administration took over at a time when the reparation cost stood at just $850m. He said, “Without equivocation, we wish to state that the unfortunate situation we have found ourselves today cannot be other than as a result of your incompetence as the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation. “It is, therefore, our patriotic demand, that you honorably resign your

Vat Increase: Businesses In Lagos To Pay 12.2 Per Cent On Goods, Services

Businesses in Lagos will pay 12.2 per cent on the sale of goods and services once the 7.2 per cent Value Added Tax increase comes into force. An analyst with Afrinvest, Adedayo Bakare, pointed this to SaharaReporters on Wednesday during a chat. The Lagos State Government had since collected tax from restaurants and other retailers under a sales tax law despite a Supreme Court ruling against such in September 2018. Bakare while speaking with SaharaReporters, said, “In Lagos, consumption tax is already 10 per cent because Lagos State charges five per cent VAT and there is also another consumption tax of five per cent. “So, for Lagos State, automatically, consumption tax is 12.2 per cent.”  Citing the data on VAT collection given by Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, in 2018, Bakare said only about four states were generating most of the VAT, adding that the tax burden on just a few is disproportionate. “Meanwhile, when they generate all these money, they wi

Nigerian Government Directs NCC To Block Over Nine Million Unregistered SIM Cards

Nigerians, who own unregistered SIM cards, might face trouble as government is set to block over nine million of such item. The Nigerian Communications Commission had in June 2019 called on telecom consumers to heed its warning and stop patronising sellers of SIM cards that have been pre-registered because anyone found using (or selling or otherwise transacting with) such will be fined and jailed upon conviction. A statement by the Federal Ministry of Communication on Thursday disclosed that Dr Isa Patanmi, the minister, had directed the NCC to block all such SIM cards until their users present themselves. The statement reads, “As at today, preliminary investigation revealed that we have over nine million unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria. “I have directed the NCC to immediately block those numbers until the users present themselves.”   News AddThis :  Original Author :  SaharaReporters, New York Disable advertisements :  from All Content via

Tahiti rail

Tahiti rail . The Tahiti rail (Gallirallus pacificus) is an extinct bird species from Tahiti. The rail was first recorded during James Cook's second voyage in 1772–1775, during which it was painted by Georg Forster and described by his father Johann. It may have also existed on nearby Mehetia. It appears to have been closely related to the buff-banded rail, and has been confused with that bird's Tongan subspecies. The Tahiti rail was 9 in (23 cm) long, with white on its underparts, throat, and "eyebrows". Its upper parts were black with white dots and bands, the hind neck was rust-coloured, the breast was grey, and it had a black band across its throat. The bill and iris were red, and the legs were pink. It was supposedly flightless, and nested on the ground. It frequented open areas, marshes, and coconut plantations, eating mainly insects and some coconut meat. Its extinction, after 1844 on Tahiti, and perhaps in the 1930s on Mehetia, was probably due to predation b
