Elections shift: FG re-opens borders, orders immediate activities at borders

- Following the news of the postponement of the general elections, the federal government has re-opened the nation's borders

- The borders of the country had been closed by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in preparation for the electoral exercise

- The NIS said it will immediately begin duties of checking activities at the borders to facilitate legal crossing

The Federal government has ordered the re-opening of all the nation’s borders closed due to the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled on Saturday, February 16.

A statement by comptroller-general, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Muhammad Babandede, in Abuja on Saturday, said that minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), ordered the re-opening of the borders, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Directive to close the borders from midnight on Friday, February 15, to Sunday, February 16, was given by the minister on Thursday, February 14.

Directing re-opening of the borders, he said that Immigration officers would continue “their normal border control and patrol duties to ensure that all persons crossing Nigeria’s land, air and sea borders travelled with valid and genuine documents’.’

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari reacted to the postponement of the 2019 elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, February 16, President Buhari expressed disappointment over the decision of the electoral umpire to postpone the elections.

Part of the statement read: "I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement."

Legit.ng also gathered that the House of Representatives also reacted to the postponement of today's, Saturday, February 16, electoral exercise through its spokesman, Abdulrazak Namdas (APC-Adamawa).

Namdas decried the postponement of the general elections, however, he hoped the delay would be a blessing in disguise to the country.
