Graduate of UNILAG bags 50 years imprisonment for raping 19-year-old girl in Lagos

A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, for raping a 19-year-old student of UNILAG on campus. John Otema, a UNILAG graduate, was charged before Justice Abiola Soladoye with three counts of rape and assault occasioning harm on two female students. The quantity surveyor and facilities manager was found guilty on two-counts of rape and assault occasioning harm in respect of the rape of the 19-year-old student (Student X), but was found not guilty on a charge of raping a 20-year-old student (Student Y) of the institution. Army Personnel Arrested For Cybercrime In Lagos

Ajayi Kayode Lance Corporal Ajayi Kayode, a serving military personnel in Lagos State, has been arrested for alleged Internet fraud.  Kayode was arrested in the Lekki axis of the state by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Ajayi Kayode The soldier, who was arrested alongside 26 others, said he was still learning “yahoo yahoo” (Internet fraud) from his friends when he was nabbed.  He confessed that his friends, who were teaching him, had told him that cybercrime was the best way to make quick money hence his involvement. EFCC spokesperson, Mr Dele Oyewale, disclosed the arrest of Kayode in a statement on Monday.  He said Kayode with service number NAF18/34732, was arrested on Saturday following intelligence received from concerned members of the public about his alleged involvement in criminal activities. Trainee Pharmacists Lament Poor Pay, Overwork In Gombe Hospitals

Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya Trainee pharmacists in Gombe State have lamented the poor remuneration in the state-owned health institutions. They accused the state government of refusing to upgrade them from student benefactors to intern pharmacists despite a notification of appointment issued to them in 2019. According to some of the interns, who spoke with SaharaReporters, they were being paid N20,000 monthly despite being overworked. The tribunal nullified the election based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.  INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja said the nomination by ANDP was invalid, adding that the party did not exercise its right guaranteed in the Fourth Alteration to the constitution by filing its suit within 14 days of the accrual of the said right. Man Arraigned In Court For Destroying Governor Akeredolu’s Campaign Vehicle

Rotimi Akeredolu Jimoh Jubril, a middle-age man was on Monday arraigned before a magistrate court in Akure, Ondo State, for allegedly destroying Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s campaign vehicle.  Jubril, an indigene of Owo and Akeredolu’s kinsman, was arrested by the police during an unrest in the town in which a vehicle branded with Governor Akeredolu’s campaign poster was damaged.  Rotimi Akeredolu During his arrest, the defendant was also accused of causing trouble and shooting no fewer than five persons at Iju Igboroke in Owo.  The police claimed that the campaign vehicle destroyed by Jubril was worth N2.5m.  He was later arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy, malicious damage, and attempted murder. Police prosecutor, Mr Adeoye Adesegan, explained that the suspect committed offences punishable under sections 332(1) 320(1) 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol 1 laws of Ondo State 2006. A former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’aba, has said that he stands by his words that the country was turning to a failed state, adding that what he said was the truth considering the insecurity, corruption and bad governance in the country. Na’aba was grilled by operatives of  Department of State Services on Monday in Abuja over his comment on the plan by his group to bring about a new Nigeria that works for all. Man Sues Jos Electricity Distribution Company Over Invasion Of Home, Property Destruction By Staff

A man, Bishop Dickson Andrew, has instituted a legal case against the Jos Electricity Distribution Company for invading his house and damaging his property while he was out. Andrew is praying the court to declare the entry into his house as illegal while demanding a compensation of N5m. Also joined in the suit are Victor Odoba, Cephas Gbabe and Ternenge Abancha, who work for the distribution company. Andrew said he returned home on February 10, 2020 when he heard movement in his ceiling. CAMA: Abide By Rule Or Create Your Country, Presidency Replies Oyedepo

An aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has berated the presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, for kicking against the Company and Allied Matters Acts in churches. Oyedepo, while speaking in his church on Sunday, described as illegal the power given to a minister to remove a trustee and close the accounts of the church without legal backing. He said, “Who was Paul persecuting? The church! Who said, “I’m the one you are persecuting?” Jesus! This country is going too far and it’s a risk. I saw something on CAMA (Company Allied Matters Act) and they put religious bodies there that Registrar-General can remove trustees without a recourse to the court. SERAP To Drag Nigerian Government To Court For Passing Repressive Law

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project has said that it would challenge the Nigerian Government in court over the recent Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari. The law, since assented to, has generated controversy in the country with rights groups rejecting it. In its condemnation of the law on Monday, SERAP described it as the most repressive law in the history of Nigeria, adding that it would be used against the people. “The Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 is the most repressive law in Nigeria’s history. Fredrick Nwabufo Fredrick Nwabufo, a Nigerian journalist and columnist, has come under fresh threats from members of the Indigenous People of Biafra. The columnist first had a brush with the proscribed group in June 2019 when he wrote an article asking the South-East to cooperate with Miyetti Allah on security. Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said that he will appeal Monday’s ruling of the state election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja and has instructed his lawyers to challenge the decision. Governor Diri, who spoke shortly after the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission wrongly excluded the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party governorship candidate in the November 16, 2009 election, said he had confidence in the judiciary that he would triumph in the end. He said, “We trust in the judiciary and we are appealing the judgment. With God on our side, we will get justice. “This is a court of first instance and I have instructed our lawyers to file an appeal.
