Mamman Daura Is Not The Problem By Azu Ishiekwene

Azu Ishiekwene I’ve been amused by the strenuous efforts to explain exactly what Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, meant or did not mean when he said last week that rotating the Presidency was no longer useful. I thought what he told the BBC Hausa service, which has existed for decades without any translation problems, was clear enough: When the time comes, the next president should be chosen on merit, not on a “turn-by-turn” arrangement. But the statement caught fire. Afenifere said it was Buhari giving a hint through his nephew that the North may wangle a Northerner as the next president. Ohaneze cried foul. Why didn’t Daura talk about competence when his nephew was contesting? The group described Daura’s comment as an unacceptable indication that the South east may wait till thy-kingdom-come before taking its own turn for the country’s top job. In the midst of it all, Chief Edwin Clark, who some thought was missing in the trough of the Niger Delta Developme

The Revolution Will Come – And Buhari Will Join It By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo What makes a revolution? Knowledge. Information. Awareness. Awakening. The Biblical Moses was a prince in the ménage of the persecutors of the Hebrews – his people. He did not know their toil because he was far removed from them. He lived in the cloistered world of princes while his people retired to a night of torment and awake to a morning of labour. But one day, a bolt of epiphany hit Moses – the prince of Egypt. He saw his people in servitude – and I guess the prince knew he was not free himself if they were in manacles. Conscience-smitten, he committed a homicide.  He became a fugitive, and eventually the liberator of his people. Awakening! Anyone can be Moses – in the case of Nigeria. Like the people of Israel under captivity in Egypt, most Nigerians have retreated into a carapace; they have become tepid and so disillusioned that they are living through each day listlessly. They have seen state violence. They have read how active citizens were tortured an

Man wearing face mask. Ahead of elections coming up in Nasarawa, Edo and Ondo states, the Independent National Electoral Commission has given a note of warning to political parties against the use of branded face masks at polling units. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, gave this directive at a town hall meeting in Nasarawa State with political parties and other election stakeholders in preparation for the bye-election coming up in the state on August 8. He said INEC has chosen to use the bye-election to test its preparedness in conducting an election during a pandemic. Man wearing face mask. Google Yakubu said, “We are on course for the Saturday elections, every material that ought to be delivered has been delivered, including the sensitive materials “We have had a good interaction with the political parties and security agencies, my overall assessment is that we are good to go. “This coming election is very important for us because this is the first election in Nigeria to

Mubarak Bala And Trial Of Islam In Nigeria By Leo Igwe

Leo Igwe Today marks a hundred days since the police in Nigeria disappeared Mubarak Bala, President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria. The police apprehended Bala following a petition that his comments on Facebook insulted the prophet of Islam. Before his ‘abduction’, Bala’s exercise of his freedoms had not gone down well with many Muslims in Northern Nigeria. A free Mubarak Bala elicited anger; hatred and hostility especially from Muslims socialized to value their faith more than a free human being. Bala came out as an ex Muslim in a dramatic way in 2014. His renunciation of Islam attracted international attention because Bala’s family consigned him to a mental hospital. The family members thought that he must be out of his senses to renounce Islam and to openly and publicly do so. Bala was born into a Muslim family and was expected to remain a Muslim for the rest of his life. But he chose to exercise his freedom. He left Islam. To many Muslims in the region, his renunciat

This Change We Got Is Long On Sleaze By Osmund Agbo

Osmund Agbo Even though this current news cycle is already saturated with the whirlwind of corruption allegations against Buhari administration officials, it has continued to deliver on its promise to be stranger than fiction. Every passing day, Nigerians wake up to yet another shameless specter that smacks of a crime plot hatched in the make-believe world of Hollywood. Concerned citizens shudder as scores upon scores of President’s men are caught in a web of unbriddled graft that could make even the rank and file of a Sicilian mafia look like players in a JV team. An oft-described austere man sold twice to the Nigerian public as the poster child for upstanding leadership is today superintending a sleaze-fest with the stench of a rotten fish. Not too long ago, a pan-Nigeria group under the auspices of the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum(NYPF), had petitioned the US Congress over alleged multiple scams at the Central Bank of Nigeria under the Buhari administration. The group
