Gowon Describes UK MP’s Fraud Allegations As False

Yakubu Gowon Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former military head of state from 1966 to 1975, has described allegations of fraud levelled against him by a British member of parliament as concocted. MP Tom Tugendhat while proposing sanctions for the Nigerian Government officials complicit in violating the rights of #EndSARS protesters on the floor of the British Parliament, said Gowon looted half of Nigeria’s treasury when he was ousted from office in a coup and fled to the United Kingdom. ICPC Detains NABDA DG, Akpa, Over N400m Fraud

Alex Akpa The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has arrested the Acting Director-General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency, Prof Alex Akpa, for allegedly defrauding the Nigerian Government of N400m. A prosecuting witness, Mrs Rouquayya Ibrahim, has narrated how a former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, stole over N14bn from the federal pension account. Testifying before the Federal High Court in Abuja as the ninth prosecution witness, Ibrahim said Maina looted the fund through more than 60 bank accounts in connivance with a former Head of Service, Stephen Oronsaye. The witness, who is an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission attached to the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering of Financing of Terrorism, said she was a member of the pension fraud task team that uncovered how names of fake pensioners were used to siphon funds by Maina and his alleged accomplices. She said a payment mandate bearing the names of several individuals totaling N94m was discovered during the cause of the verification, while some of the pensioners’ names on the list were fake. Police Open Fire On Traders In Bayelsa

A team of policemen have opened fire on traders in Bayelsa, leaving four people terribly injured. The policemen went berserk and opened fire on traders at Tombia Market after claiming their activities led to traffic that affected their passage through the area. A 17-year-old girl and three other women, who sustained severe injuries, are currently battling for their lives, TheGuardian reports. An eyewitness disclosed that the policemen, numbering six, started shooting into the air for traders and pedestrians to leave the roadside and make way for their vehicle to pass. He said when the traders hesitated to leave, one of the policemen opened fire on the traders, causing pandemonium. The 17-year-old girl was shot in her two legs, leaving her currently paralysed.
