Naira Marley Irritates The Hypocrisy In All Of Us By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo Our society is one which diminishes the young. Being young is a capital offence in Nigeria. We take a loathing to the daring young. Confidence of youth is garbled as arrogance and juvenile vitality is dismissed as imprudence or irresponsibility. We hold fast to the materiality of age – even though inconsequential. An ageist society we are. I have followed with stupefaction the barbs thrown on the path of Naira Marley, the singer, at different turns. It appears the state is just desperate to put a noose on his neck. I recall in May 2019, he was arrested by the EFCC. I must admit, I was taken in by the anti-graft agency’s gambit at the time. After much of the frenzy and media prosecution, nothing much came out of it. Though I know the case is still sputtering in court, the charges against the singer are vacant of substance. Naira Marley has been roped into other controversial cases with the law. I will only cite the most recent instance. In June, the singer perfo

Copyright Infringement: NCC May Issue Arrest Warrant For Managing Directors Of Macmillan, Melrose Over Intellectual Theft

The Nigerian Copyright Commission is considering issuing a warrant for the arrest of managing directors of Macmillan and Melrose Publishers Limited over copyright infringement. The NCC had invited the duo following a petition against them by Elias Ozikpu, writer of ‘Heroes of the Night’. They, however, failed to honour the investigation, an act that has led the NCC to consider ordering the police to arrest them. Ozikpu’s lawyer, Mr Rockson Igelige, confirmed to SaharaReporters that the NCC had invited the duo twice but they have continued to ignore the invitation. “The Managing Directors of Melrose and Macmillan were billed to appear at the NCC headquarters on July 29, but refrained from doing so and only sent representatives. “The NCC rejected their representatives on the grounds that the directors could not make statements in a representative capacity,” Igelige added. SaharaReporters had reported how the playwright in a petition addressed to the Director-General of the N

Another Nigerian Lady In Lebanon Cries Out For Help After Being Maltreated By Employer, Agent

Another Nigerian lady in Lebanon, Olabisi, has cried out for help following threats to her life. Olabisi, who has been in Lebanon since October 2019, lamented that she had been working as a caregiver but had not received any salary from her ‘masters’. She said both the agent in Lebanon and Nigeria have been receiving her funds. Speaking with SaharaReporters, she narrated the events that led to her receiving threats. She said, “My madam’s children came back from an outing and I went to open the door for them to come in but one of them hit me very hard in my stomach. “I reported the issue to my madam but instead of her to caution her children, she was blaming me and said I should not beat them again. “The father almost beat me up and I spoke in annoyance. This made them angry, they called my agent and they sent me out of the house. “My agent then called me on the phone that he would send me to jail.”  Olabisi said her agent was forcing her to work to fully return the money

He was charged to court by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria on a 12-count charge of producing substandard engine oil after rebranding them. SON said Anayo and others now at large, on July 15, 2020, at Mammy Market, Navy Town, Ojo, “Did indulge in the production of adulterated/substandard Total and Mobil engine oil lubricants for public consumption.” The products, SON said, did not comply with the mandatory industrial standards for lubricants, an offence punishable under Section 26(2) of the SON Act, 2015.
