We’ll Protect Ourselves From Fulani Herdsmen If Buhari, Abiodun Fail To Do So—Ogun Monarch

The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, in Ogun State has warned the Nigerian and state governments against possible consequences of the killing of people in Yewaland by Fulani herdsmen. Some suspected herdsmen had, on Friday night, invaded Igbooro, Oja-Odan in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state, leaving three dead and two villagers injured. The marauding herdsmen had reportedly invaded the village close to Eggua in Oja-Odan around 11pm, shooting sporadically and setting ablaze three houses and storehouses in the village. In the latest killing, a mother and her child were among the three persons hacked to death in their huts, while two persons were said to be in critical condition after they were shot by the herdsmen.   It was also learnt that many people, including children, sustained injuries. The attack came barely 24 hours after five persons were killed in Owode Ketu. In response, the monarch condemned the killin...

Nigerian Politicians Shouldn’t Contest Power Like Planning Coup – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has advised Nigerian politicians not to see elections as coups or wars, but rather come together to support whoever emerges as the winner. According to Daily Trust, Jonathan spoke in Yenegoa, the Bayelsa State capital, during the thanksgiving and anniversary service to mark Governor Douye Diri’s one year in office, while advising those in politics not to play it with bitterness. He said, “Our democratic process is recognised by law, so modern-day politicians should not begin to practise democracy and contestation to power as if we were organising a coup. “At the end of the political process, we expect that both parties should come together and the winner carries everybody along. Leaders who contested the election must know that it was a political process known by law, and whoever wins, we agree that God gave him that position. “I want to thank Governor Diri for opening his hands and welcoming every citizen of Bayelsa State, irrespecti...

Senate Screens New Military Chiefs This Week Behind Closed Doors

The Senate committees responsible for the oversight of the Nigerian military will start the screening of the newly-appointed service chiefs this week, behind closed doors. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Ali Ndume, who confirmed the development in a chat with Punch, on Thursday, however, said the service chiefs would be screened behind closed doors so as not to compromise national security. The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, had on Wednesday, referred the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for the confirmation of the new service chiefs to the joint committees on Army, Navy, and Air Force. Lawan gave the committees two weeks to carry out their assignment and report to the Senate in plenary. The appointees for confirmation are Maj. Gen. Lucky lrabor as Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru (Chief of Army Staff); Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, (Chief of Naval Staff); and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao as Chief of Air Staff. They are to replace the former Chief...

#EndSARS: Reinstigating An Overriding Standard Against The Hobbesian State By Tunde Akingbondere

Over the months, I have been extremely bothered, especially with the level we operate as a slum country, armed with less or no preparation for the future that is almost besieging us. This obvious blemish has not disappeared despite the humongous write-ups from potential window dressers called writers; they have subjected intellection to the crevices of poor and monstrous tunes. These tunes have in their wacky sounds masqueraded in the annals of heroic history and under the guise of most glaring reality, only a few intellectuals have refused to be confused by all these coverups. They knew darkness existed and that darkness had never been a topic in history. Most interesting is this core responsibility of mine and which I think should be a chore for an average Nigerian. I have taken it upon myself to routinely explore a country that had been hellbent on stifling the belief of its citizens in it. Apart from denying its subsets of their most basic needs, it is also hoarding from th...

The State, The Police And The #EndSARS Protesters By Evans Ufeli Esq

The Nigerian government using the instrumentality of the police force stopped her citizens in Lagos today from assembling for a peaceful protest following the ruling of the Lagos State Tribunal of inquiry for victims of SARS brutality to allow the Lekki Concession Company to repossess the Lekki Tollgate for business.  The government argued that the last protest was hijacked by hoodlums, leaving huge destruction of lives and properties worth millions of naira. With this mindset, the Lagos State government aligns with the federal government to hold forth this narrative tacitly against the protesters constitutional right to protest and express themselves within the bounds of law.  Let me state here that the event of the last protest at the Lekki tollgate in October 2020 was very peaceful until the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited the military to the protest arena from where the military introduced violence into the protest by shooting at armless protesters...
