CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0    BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The simple meaning of the word “Postcolonial” or “postcolonialism” is after the colonial/colonialism, and it is used to refer to an era that succeeds the colonial era or the era of colonialism. In a more  specialised sense, Ashcroft, Bill, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin, (1989) observe that the term “postcolonial” is a problematic one since many people interpret it as “a concern only with the national culture after the departure of the imperial power”.
