CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.0    BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The simple meaning of the word “Postcolonial” or “postcolonialism” is after the colonial/colonialism, and it is used to refer to an era that succeeds the colonial era or the era of colonialism. In a more  specialised sense, Ashcroft, Bill, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin, (1989) observe that the term “postcolonial” is a problematic one since many people interpret it as “a concern only with the national culture after the departure of the imperial power”. Post colonialism is an interdisciplinary movement with the primary goal of reforming/reconstructing the jaundiced image of colonized countries, especially as constructed by the colonisers and their agents.
