Nigerian newspapers review for Monday, April 8: Ask for help if you can’t find solution to Zamfara killings - PDP tells Buhari

The Nigerian newspapers review for Monday, April 9, mainly focuses on the measures taken by the federal government to halt the bandit attacks in Zamfara state.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to either ask for help or quit if he is unable to stop the killings by bandits in Zamfara state.

The Punch newspaper reports that Uche Secondus, the national chairman of the PDP, advised the president to stop making excuses for the killings in Zamfara state and find a lasting solution to the issue.

He dismissed the claims by Buhari that the opposition was politicising the killings in Zamfara and urged the president to rejig his security plan to stop the insecurity problems facing the country.

“We will rather call on the President to act like the father of the nation and take decisive action, instead of looking for excuses that are not there,” Secondus said.

“Nigerians will recall that the All Progressives Congress and the President came into power by politicising the killings in the North-East zone of the country in 2014 and 2015.

“Instead of joining the country then to look for ways of looking for solutions to the killings, the APC and the President feasted on it.

“As you can see, no one has spoken or politicised the killings in Zamfara. But because the President did the same before, he feared that opposition parties would do the same.

“We are all appealing to the President to sit up, rejig his security architecture and find lasting solutions to the myriad of problems facing the country and the citizens.

“If the President is finding the job too difficult to do, he should call for help or quit. We are tired of burying our children, wives and brothers. Our women should stop being made widows at young age.”

In a related report, the federal government has suspended mining activities in Zamfara state and its environs part of steps to check the activities of bandits in the state.

Vanguard newspaper reports that the federal government also ordered foreign miners to vacate mining sites in the state immediately.

The acting inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, at a press conference on Sunday, April 8, warned that foreign miner that continues mining activities would have his license revoked.

The Guardian newspaper reports that the order was made following a recent attack that killed about 50 persons in the state.

“As part of sustained efforts to flush out, and permanently put an end to armed banditry and criminality in Zamfara State, in particular, and the northwest in general, the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the Nigerian Military and other security services has commenced ‘Operation Puff-Adder’, which is a full-scale security offensive against the bandits,” the IGP’s statement read.

“The operation is aimed at reclaiming every public space under the control of the bandits, arrest and bring to book all perpetrators of violence in the area and their collaborators, achieve a total destruction of all criminal camps and hideouts, mop up all illicit weapons fueling the violence, and attain a full restoration of law and order in the affected communities.

“Our commitment to protecting the sanctity of life and property is irrevocable and we will not scale down the pressure on the armed bandits until they are totally flushed-out.”

This Day newspaper reports that the acting IG was flanked at the press conference by the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari; Director General, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Yusuf Bichi; and Director General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr. Ahmed Abubakar.

To another report, some former governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are mounting pressure on some senators of the party to accept the choice of Ahmad Lawan for Senate president.

The Nation newspaper reports that President Buhari is believed to have met Senator Danjuma Goje to accept the choice of Lawan.

Some of the former governors include Ahmed Sani Yerima, Adamu Aliero, Abdullahi Adamu, Aliyu Wammako, George Akume, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Kabiru Gaya and Godswill Akpabio.

They were reported to have sent a delegation to Goje to reconsider his position.

“It is true we are trying to avoid cracks in APC over the Ninth Senate President and some of us have met on the President’s choice and how to prevail on Goje to sacrifice his aspiration," a former governor who pleaded not to be named said.

“I can tell you that some of us have opened talks with him. We are talking to him; we are mounting pressure. We also decided to send a delegation to him.

“As a matter of right, Goje is qualified to lead the Senate but we do not really want him to disagree with the President. And he is not a leader who believes in confrontation.”
