Tension rises as southeast APC, PDP scramble for Reps speaker's seat

- The seat of the speaker of the House of Representatives is now a recipe for contest between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

- Southeast lawmakers of APC are asking the leadership of the party to zone the position of the speaker to them

- However, lawmakers of the PDP are optimistic that the next speaker of the House will emerge from the opposition party

The Youths Consultative Forum South East of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the southeast has called on the party's leadership to give it the position of the speaker.

Speaking in Abuja, Romanus Oguleme, the national coordinator of the group said that the zone has credible and top members of the APC in the National Assembly to oversee the chambers, Vanguard reports.

Oguleme said: “We categorically state that the South-East has two ranking members of the APC and these two: chairman, House Committee on Healthcare Services, Chike Okafor and chairperson, House Committee on Aviation, Nkeiru Onyejeocha are eminently qualified to run for Speaker or to be appointed as principal officers.

“If the performance of both members in the 8th Assembly should be used as criteria, they have proven themselves capable of handling delicate and sensitive assignments.

“The Okafor-led Healthcare Services Committee is effectively performing its oversight functions in the health sector, with many Nigerians still remembering the highly publicised probe into the alleged N351 billion fraud in the NHIS as well as stakeholders’ commendation of the House sub-committee of Primary Healthcare Care revitalisation.

"Onyejeocha performed creditably well in leading her committee in ensuring a good standard of efficiency in the aviation sector.”

However, Anayo Nwonu, a lawmaker representing Ezza north /Ishielu federal constituency in the House of Representatives on Monday, March 25 was certain that a member of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will become the next speaker.

He said: “National politics and legislative politics are quite different. The fact that we reduced in number will not really affect any legislative process in the green chambers. For now, we are already shopping for who will become the next speaker and I know Peoples Democratic Party PDP is the main people to decide who will be the speaker of the 9th Assembly.

“In fact, let me tell you, as we are being sworn in, PDP will definitely gain back its number. What PDP is saying is to counsel the Presidential election, they are not saying that the whole elections should be counselled, the governors are congratulating INEC where they did well but blame them where they didn’t do well.

“Everyone in Nigeria knows that the presidential elections were a completely rigged election. But I pray PDP will go to court and take their mandate back.

“My people are not aggressive, the point is that Ezza north people understand the politic of the day so they are always political conscious, what makes it look as if there is always a problem or fight in my place is the case of outsiders trying to throw a stone on a class house.

“But as a lawmaker we are trying to stop that, what happened in the last elections will not repeat itself in Izzi north, in fact in the entire constituencies.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the north central caucus of the APC in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 19, asked the national leadership of the party to reward the zone with the position of speaker of the House.

John Dyegh, Benue convener of the caucus and lawmakers across party lines said: "With a comfortable representation from our zone, we deserve the position of the speaker as both the northwest and southwest zones have been comfortably settled via the position of president and vice president.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
