A lawmaker in Abia state, Solomon Akpulonu, on Wednesday, March 20, called on the federal government to ease the suffering of motorists using the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road.
Vanguard reports that Akpulonu who represents Obingwa east state constituency and is the deputy majority leader of the Abia state House of Assembly urged the government to fix the road as it is too important to the economic survival of his constituency.
Speaking a forum to thank his constituents for re-electing him, Akpulonu lamented that his people have been made to suffer untold hardship due to the pitiable condition of the road.

Stating that over 500 businesses have been closed down due to the poor condition of the road, the lawmaker said he is sad that the road had been featuring in annual national budgets since 2009 without the federal government mobilising contractors to commence work.
“I’m begging the federal government to urgently commence rehabilitation work on the abandoned Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road.
Many communities in Obingwa east state Constituency have been cut off from Aba and the neighbouring towns in Akwa Ibom State due to the deplorable condition of this road,” Akpulonu said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a cross section of traders in Oyigbo, headquarters of Oyigbo local government area of Rivers, have commended the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and urged him to come to their aid.

Specifically, they want the president to use the opportunity of his victory at the Saturday, February 23, presidential poll to fix the dilapidated Eleme, the Oyigbo axis of Port Harcourt -Aba road.
The portion of the road had been in bad shape since 2009. Residents said some of the road users had died and goods worth millions of naira destroyed in the last 10 years.
