Onnoghen: Legal profession is on trial - First female SAN laments

Nigeria’s first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Folake Solanke, has decried the controversy that the legal profession and judiciary has been drawn into following the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Mrs Solanke, who spoke on Wednesday at a special valedictory court session organised by the Oyo State judiciary in honour of the late Justice Dulcie Oguntoye, said ”the legal profession was on trial”.

According to her, the development arose because the profession was engulfed in corruption and needed reformation to restore its golden age.

Solanke said Nigeria was troubled and groaning under the trauma and tragedy that led to the suspension of Onnoghen.

She said the legal profession had monumental challenges and needed to reform itself because the profession was supposed to be in the forefront of the war against corruption.

“There is professional lamentation in the land and the bar and the bench must rise up to their professional responsibilities to cleanse the filthy Augean stable of Nigeria.

“I can only appeal again to the professional reprobates to stop polluting the stream of justice.

“Their egregious conduct inflicts mud on and taints the innocent with corruption.

”However, not only the erring lawyers or judges are to be blame, the people who corrupt them must also share in the infamy which engulfs the profession.

“Sadly, the legislature, executive, law enforcement agencies and the private sector are also tainted with corruption,’’ Mrs Solanke said.

She called on the NBA and body of SANs to find a solution to the challenges in the judiciary.

In his remarks, the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Munta Abimbola , described the late Oguntoye as a diligent, talented and fearless judge in the discharge of her duties.

Abimbola, who was represented by a judge, Aderonke Aderemi, said the late jurist lived an exemplary and courageous life.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oguntoye, who was born on May 23, 1923, died on November 12, 2018 at the age of 95.

NAN also reports Mrs Oguntoye had served in the Lagos High Court and Oyo State High Court and retired in 1988.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Emmanuel Abiodun, said he was very grateful to the Oyo judiciary for the support to the family and honour accorded to the late jurist.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that some Nigerians took to the street of London over the call for the reinstatement of Justice Onnoghen.

These Nigerians in their scores said they welcomed the removal of the judicial chief as it is a clear deviation from the several years of impunity.

The protesters also called for the assistance by the government of the United Kingdom and the prime minister to join President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

Nigerian Academy Of Science Inducts First Female President

The Nigerian Academy of Science has inducted a professor of Parasitology/Epidemiology, Ekanem Ikpi Braide, as its 19th President on Thursday. NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year. This did not however, materialize. According to the release, the project will have a four to five-year execution time after the signing of the FID.
