Lagos-Ibadan expressway: Why project cost increased to N134bn - Supervisor

- The federal controller of works in Lagos state, Adedamola Kuti, said the cost of Lagos-Ibadan expressway has increased to N134billion

- Kuti said the increase was due to the additional works to be done on the project

- He also warned motorists to obey the traffic laws to prevent gridlock during Christmas

The federal controller of works in Lagos state, Adedamola Kuti, has said the construction cost for the section one of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, from Lagos to Sagamu interchange has risen to N134 billion.

The Punch reports that Kuti said this on Tuesday, December 18, at Asese and Mowe section of the project.

Legit.ng gathers from Kuti's statement that the costs of the project rose due to the additional works required in the road, which was not part of the original budget.

He said: "The initial contract sum of this project was N70 billion but with additional work introduced, the figure rose to N134 billion for the section one which is the Lagos-Sagamu axis. There has also been an increase in the time the project will be completed.

“It was supposed to be completed in 2017 but we now have to incorporate underpasses, flyovers and toll plazas and with additional work, the date has shifted to about 2021. But what we are saying is that what we experienced in the past due to funding will not happen again.”

Kuti also gave the assurance that federal government is committed to the project. He thereby warned motorists to respect traffic rule to prevent gridlock during festivities.

Also speaking is the project manager of Julius Berger, Thomas Christl, who said the project was stopped in June 2018 due to lack of funds.

Christl promised that the gridlock caused by the incomplete project would be addressed before Christmas.

He said: "We are aware of the concerns of motorists and we are doing everything we can to minimise it. At the completion of the road, the gridlock would be addressed."

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
