Members of Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association (ANDA) have vowed to stage a protest at the National Assembly and the police headquarters today over the killing of a vendor by a policeman in the convoy of Speaker of House Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila. President of ANDA, Benji Obute, told SaharaReporters that the wife of the slain newspaper vendor recently had a newborn baby and he was planning to have the naming ceremony for the baby on Saturday. Obute said the speaker hurriedly stopped his convoy when he heard the sound of a gunshot and inquired from his security aides who responded that there was nothing. Kaduna has become Nigeria’s kidnapping hub with at least one incident of kidnapping recorded every day since 2015 and has grown worse in recent months causing residents to flee to neighbouring states and motorists to desert the popular Kaduna-Abuja expressway. On Sunday, eight students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, were kidnapped along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway while gunmen stormed Albasi village in Sabon Birnin in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State and killed eleven persons. Sixteen people have been killed in Uganda after the army and police opened fire on supporters of detained opposition leader, Bobi Wine. The security forces fired teargas and rubber bullets at angry protesters who set fires, barricaded roads. They looted stores in the capital Kampala, as calls mounted for calm ahead of the January 14 elections. Wine, 38, who is also a presidential hopeful for the general elections, has faced multiple arrests and harassment since he decided to run against the 76-year-old dictator, Yoweri Museveni. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has warned promoters of cloned brands to desist from such acts in a bid to curb the influx of substandard products into the country. Director-General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, explained that the agency would discourage the registration of any product that had a similar business name with an existing brand or those hidden under the names of successful brands to short-change unsuspecting consumers. Salim stated this during a visit of Alaba International Market Association to SON office in Lagos. The United Forum of Kano Islamic Clerics has asked the state government to stop the teaching of French in schools across the state. The clerics, who also asked for all ties with France to be cut by the state government, demanded that all students learning French should be compelled to switch to Arabic Language as a form of protest for a blasphemous cartoon in the European country.  A 47-year-old middle school teacher in France, Samuel Paty, was on October 16, 2020 beheaded by an 18-year-old Muslim for showing his pupils a cartoon, which Muslims claimed depicted Prophet Muhammad in a bad light.
