S/East governor laments over new minimum wage; says implementation would cost state additional N2bn

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has disclosed that implementing the new N30,000 minimum wage will add over N2 billion to the wage bill of the state government.

Obiano made the disclosure on Wednesday, April 24 at his residence in Aguleri, Anambra East local government area, while addressing some staff of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the governor, however, assured that the new national minimum wage will be paid, just as he promised.

He said: “I will not hesitate to pay the national minimum wage despite huge financial implications.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state declared that 95 percent of states in the country cannot pay the proposed N30,000 minimum wage to workers.

Umahi, who is the chairman of the South-east Governors Forum, said this in Abakalili, while inaugurating a 36-member fact-finding committee to ascertain the mode of workers’ promotion arrears payment in states across the six geo-political zones of the states.

According to Umahi, the payment of the N30,000 can only be realised if the federation account allocation formula was reviewed to offer more earnings to states.

NLNG Signs Letter Of Intent On Delayed Gas Expansion Project

The Nigerian Natural Liquefied Gas LTD has signed a letter of intent for the engineering, procurement and construction of its long held up Train Seven project. In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, it said that the $10bn project will be executed by a consortium of Italian firm Saipem, Japan’s Chiyoda and South Korea’s Daewoo. The statement reads, “The project will form part of the investment of over $10bn including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment profile of Nigeria.” Managing Director of NLNG, Tony Atta, said in 2018 that the Final Investment Decision would be made in the fourth quarter of that year.
