Lionel Messi is just 1 goal away from an incredible milestone in La Liga

- Lionel Messi scored 399th La Liga goal in Getafe's 2-1 victory in the first league game in the new year

- Luis Suarez scored the second goal for the visitors as they move five points clear of Atletico Madrid

- The Argentine star is however one goal away from 400 La Liga goals

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is one goal away from reach 400 Spanish League goals Barcelona after scoring the opener in their 2-1 over Getafe on Sunday.

It took the 31-year-old just 20 minutes to put the Catalans in front with a solo effort, and 19 minutes later, Luis Suarez doubled the visitors' lead.

Two minutes to the end of the first half, Jaime Mata pulled one back for the hosts but it wasn't enough to rescue them from defeat.

With one more goal, the five time Ballon d'Or winner will become the first player to score 400 La Liga goals - one of the seven stars to have reached the milestone in top European Leagues.

Others who have reached 400 goals in the European elite leagues are Imre Schlosser, Jimmy McGrory, Cristiano and Uwe Seeler but still with a way to go to match the only two players who have managed to hit 500 league goals - Josep Bican and Ferenc Puskás.

Meanwhile, last night's victory pushed the Camp Nou side to five points clear of Atletico Madrid, who have 35 points from 18 matches.

Messi spent his Christmas holiday with his family back home in Rosario and on his return to the club, scored a goal.

According to Spanish news outlet, the Argentine has 88 goals more than Cristiano Ronaldo who is now scoring freely himself in Serie A.

The only other players still active in LaLiga in the top 30 are Aduriz (155) and Karim Benzema (132).

So far this season, Messi has scored 20 goals and 10 assists in 20 appearances for Barcelona, and has a chance to score more with 18 more league games to go.
