Tell us what China does to corrupt officials - Nigerians ask Obi as reactions trail vice presidential debate

Reactions have trailed the vice presidential debate held on Friday, December, which had Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Other participants were Ganiyu Galadima of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Umma Abdullahi-Getso of Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Khadijah Abdullahi of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN).

Punch reports that Obi was asked by some Nigerians on Twitter to talk about the punishment meted out by China to its corrupt officials, not just its economic performance.

Legit.ng gathers that at the vice presidential debate held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Obi said Nigeria lost four million jobs in a six-month period, while China created 10 million jobs.

He said: “If you look at what China has been able to do with SMEs, SMEs in China is contributing to 60 per cent of their GDP. And 60 per cent of China’s GDP is 7.2tn (dollars), which is 18 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP.

“China today, using the same SMEs, is guaranteeing 10 million jobs annually. Half of this year alone, China has produced 7.2 million jobs, which is over 40 per cent of their target. Within the same period, Nigeria lost four million jobs.”

See reactions below:

Mustapha believes that the PDP vice presidential candidate was given the questions prior to the debate, saying he could not be reeling out statistics of other countries without having clue to the questions that would be asked.

A Twitter user with the handle @anipossa, tweeted: "What is this obsession with China economy? Will Obi and PDP be willing to do what China are doing to boost their economy ? Lock up all corrupt individuals? I doubt! #Debate2019"

Apart from the criticism of Obi, some Nigerians also talked about the performance of other participants of the debate.

Ada Campbell obviously expected more than the performance she got from the running mate of Oby Ezekwesili.

Tosin Olugbenga was also disappointed with the performance of the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

She believes Obi performed better than the senior of advocate of Nigeria, saying the former had enough information and was well articulated.

Afolarin simply meditated on the statement made by Vice President Osinbajo about having a lot of patience to be the vice president of Nigeria. According to him, there is a deep meaning to Osinbajo's statement.

George Ukaegbu has another plan for the 2019 presidential election. He says he would rather pair Osinbajo and Obi together for the presidency, saying they are better than their principals.

Chijindu Itoroh simply retweeted Obi's statement. The statement read: "We have lots of security issues today because we are currently unable to create jobs which other countries have created effortlessly."

Abdulmumin Jibrin is of the opinion that the debate was great and that Obi did well but should have cross-checked the statistics he gave that were not accurate. He says Vice President Osinbajo was simply excellent.

Legit.ng previously reported that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended its vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi's performance at the recently-held vice presidential debate for the 2019 polls, saying Obi had an outstanding performance at the debate.
