Cross River Judge Collapses During Protest Over Unpaid Salary

A magistrate in Calabar, Cross River State, Richard Bassey, has collapsed at the gate of the Governor’s Office on the second day of an ongoing protest over unpaid salaries. Some magistrates had started a protest at the Government House on Monday over nonpayment of salary arrears for two years. On Tuesday, Bassey, who joined his colleagues for the protest, collapsed amid the demonstration. He was, however, immediately revived by his colleagues who later took him to hospital. It was gathered that the magistrates were in their full regalia and carried placards calling for the payment of their salary arrears on Tuesday. A young man who had his dreadlocks shaved off recently by soldiers at Sapele, Delta State, has said his only crime is being a Nigerian. The aggrieved man said he had gone on a visit to his hometown, Sapele, from Lagos State when he was accosted by the soldiers who harassed, assaulted and brutally shaved off his dreadlocks. Oyo businessman kidnapped Less Than 24 Hours After Another Was Killed

File photo A businessman, Monsuru Aderoju, has been reportedly kidnapped in the Igangan area of Ibarapa, Oyo State, barely 24 hours after a member of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Mrs Sherifat Adisa, was murdered. BREAKING: Court Rejects Police Request For More Time Over Sowore’s Bail Application

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abuja has rejected the request by the Nigerian police for more time to enable the force to study the formal bail application filed by the human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and four others. At the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday, the presiding magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello, stood down the matter for two hours and directed the police lawyer, Adamu Musa, who was holding brief for James Idachaba, to go through the bail application. The prosecution counsel earlier told the court that he was not ready for the bail application filed by the defence counsel, Marshal Abubakar, stating that they were not served within the stipulated time as ordered by the court. He said they were served around 10.53am in the court, noting that there were issues of fact that needed their response in the application.
