Officials of the Delta State-owned joint security outfit, Operation Delta Hawk, have shot dead a woman, barely three weeks after its inauguration by the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa. The deceased, identified as Amaka Ohanaja, is said to be a petty trader who was attending to her business on Wednesday, along the New General Hospital Road, Asaba. This was when a stray bullet from the Operation Delta Hawk officials hit her and she died on the spot. According to eyewitness accounts, the operatives of the state security outfit were chasing occupants of a tinted Lexus car who refused to stop at a checkpoint and in a bid to arrest the escaping occupants of the car, a gunshot was fired at the vehicle. A member of a six-man kidnap syndicate terrorising residents of Ondo and Kogi states has been killed in a foiled kidnapping bid, the Army said on Wednesday. The kidnap operation was scuttled by troops of the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army along the Kogi and Ondo border towns of ibilo-Isua in Igarra village while the kidnappers were attempting to abduct three travellers on the route. Brigadier General Zakari Abubakar, the Commander of 32 Artillery Brigade, made the disclosure to journalists in Akure, the Ondo state capital. A renowned Islamic scholar and retired justice, Ahmed Lemu, died on Thursday. He died at the age of 91 in Minna, Niger State. His son, Nurudeen, announced the death on behalf of his family, Punch reports. “It is with sadness and reverence to Allah that we announce the passing away of our father, Dr Justice Sheikh Ahmed Lemu OFR, in the early hours of this morning in Minna. Burial arrangements to be announced later,” he said. Lemu is one of the two Nigerians who won the King Faisal Prize.
