Titilayo Adeyeun, the wife of a computer programmer,  Michael Imoleayo, whisked away from his house on Friday morning by security operatives, said the men, some of whom were dressed in military camouflage, tore the net to their room and threatened to shoot them. Titilayo said the men switched off the streetlight before surrounding the house. In an exclusive interview with SaharaReporters, she said the military men had their helmets on while others were clothed in black bulletproof. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will be meeting the Nigerian government for another round of negotiation over its ongoing strike. The strike has lasted for about eight months as the union insists that the government must meet all of its demands before the strike would be called off. In a tweet on Wednesday, ASUU said the meeting with the government was called by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and would be held on Friday at the minister’s conference hall. “The Federal Government has said it will resume meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday. The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated $15m to avert famine in north-east states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. The annual food security assessment projection in the region shows that 5.1m people would be at risk of starving between June and August next year when farmers wait for their harvest to yield. The UN’s human rights coordinator for Nigeria, Edward Kallon, said the money would be used to ensure the projected famine is averted. “The humanitarian community is extremely worried by the rising food insecurity in north-east Nigeria. We are now recording levels of food insecurity similar to 2016-2017, at the peak of the humanitarian crisis, when the risk of famine was looming over the north-east,” Kallon said in a statement after the fund was announced.  “We are not at famine levels of food insecurity in Nigeria, but we must spare no effort to scale up our actions and ensure that the situation does not deteriorate.” The food projection assessment...

Doris Ididia, sister of a victim of police brutality, has narrated how the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad ( SARS ) tortured and starved her brother for three days before he passed away. She accused one Inspector Kingsley of orchestrating the operation in October 2016 which left her brother, Festus Idehen, with various degrees of injuries before he eventually died. Ididia burst into tears while narrating how the police killed her brother before the independent investigative panel in Abuja on Wednesday. She told the panel that her brother was beaten to stupor by the mob and that the officer rejected efforts to avail him with medical treatment. The deceased was said to have bought a car from his brother-in-law, Onyekachi, which police claimed was a stolen car. A member representing Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Amos Gwamna Magaji, has condemned in strong terms the killings of the District Head of Gidan Zaki and his son in Atyap Chiefdom, Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Magaji, in a statement, described the murders which occurred during the early hours of Tuesday as evil and a violation of the sanctity of human lives. He lamented that the killings happened at a time the state government and relevant stakeholders were making an effort to ensure peace in the area following attacks on communities which left scores of people dead and properties destroyed. The lawmaker said the murders were a deliberate attempt by mischief makers to disrupt the relative peace process that the ethnic groups in the area had initiated.
