A lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, has condemned the poor remuneration of judges and justices in the country, calling for an upward review of their salaries and allowances to build trust and reduce corruption in the dispensation of justice. Ajulo told SaharaReporters that the remuneration of judges should be to commensurate with the selfless service they render, pointing out the need to have a system that would consider and reward indelible work and services rendered by the judges. He said the judges were being denied so many things, including their social freedom and basic comfort of life to interact and relate freely with people. “Their lifestyle has been taken away from them,” he said. “You cannot see a judge dancing in public, and you cannot see them making comments on social media. Governor Dapo Abiodun The Centre for Infrastructural and Technological Advancement for the Blind (CITAB) has asked the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to ensure that blind persons are catered for following his directive for free internet service to primary and secondary school students enrolling in e-learning in the state. The convener of the association, Jolomi Fenemigho, frowned on the absence of inclusion in the governor’s directive. Governor Dapo Abiodun “The initiative is laudable,” Fenemigho said. “But, visually impaired students are conveniently left out of such plans. How can the Ogun State government claim to launch a digital e-learning class which no visually impaired student is aware of? Member states of the United Nations have been asked to increase the representation of women on the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disability. The call was made by an international NGO, Sight Savers, working to prevent avoidable blindness and eliminate neglected tropical diseases. Its country Director, Sunday Isiyaku, said in a statement sent to SaharaReporters that COVID-19 had affected women with disabilities the hardest, hence the need to increase their voice on the committee. He said, “We need to see more women with disabilities in positions of leadership,” Isiyaku said. “If women are not welcomed into the spaces where decisions are made – how will their voices ever be heard? “People with disabilities are experiencing some of the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and women with disabilities are the hardest hit. Two sisters who made a 19-year-old to engage in commercial sex in Russia to clear a $45,000 debt have been jailed for 14 years each.
