A member of the House of Representatives, Simon Karu, has revealed that each member of the House earns N9.3m monthly. Karu, who represents Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency in Gombe State, said the money includes their monthly salary and office running costs. He made the disclosure while speaking in a panel at an event to mark Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary. The lawmaker, however, said most of the funds were spent on constituents’ high demands. He said, “The official salary of a member, House of Representatives which I also receive monthly is N800, 000. The office running cost of a member of the House of Representatives is N8.5m. “Those of you who know, know that I said exactly what it is. The problem is what the constituents demand and when you don’t meet they begin to call you names. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo has apologised to residents and motorists plying the Orita Obele Road over its bad and deplorable condition after a story by SaharaReporters.  The governor said he accepted the blame for the bad state of the roads, which had caused many residents and motorists untold hardship.  He spoke while featuring on a radio program on Sunshine 96.5 FM, Akure, the state capital. The schools were shut indefinitely in March as part of measures to check the spread of COVID-19. The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, in his presidential speech to mark the 60th independence of the nation shaded his predecessors, claiming they presided over the near destruction of the country.  Buhari in his speech also boasted that “no government in the past did what we are doing with such scarce resources” and that “we have managed to keep things going despite the disproportionate spending on security.”  In his attack on previous governments, Buhari said; “Those in the previous governments, from 1999 – 2015, who presided over the near destruction of the country, have now the impudence to attempt to criticise our efforts”.  Former President Olusegun Obasanjo served as the Nigerian president between 1999 and 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
