Arresting Citizens For "Insulting" President Is Unconstitutional And Will Be Challenged By Tope Akinyode

Tope Akinyode The arrest of a 70-year-old man and two others for "insulting" President Muhammadu Buhari and governor of Katsina State is unconstitutional and therefore condemnable. The point has to be made that defamation (whether civil or criminal) is private or personal in nature and public officers or government agencies are barred by law from suing for defamation.  In the case of Omega Bank Plc V Government of Ekiti State (2007) 16 NWLR (PT. 1061) 445 AT 478 - 479 PARA. CBN, Bankers’ Committee Reach Agreement To Halt Employees Sack

The Central Bank of Nigeria have suspended the ongoing staff layoffs by some banks in the country. The apex bank said in a statement that the decision was taken after a special meeting of the Bankers’ Committee. SaharaReporters  had reported how a pregnant cashier at the Ketu branch of Access Bank collapsed on Saturday after hearing of her sack by the bank. Access Bank had announced plans to sack its workers as a result of the negative impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.
