- Segun Showunmi says Atiku Abubakar will accept the verdict of the presidential election petition tribunal concerning the recent elections

- Showunmi discloses that Atiku has promised not to allow Nigeria experience any crisis or tension arising from his defeat at the election

The aide says even though Atiku believes he will reclaim his mandate, he remains president in the heart of Nigerians

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PPD) in the February 23, 2019, election, will accept the ruling of the tribunal concerning his petition, his aide, Segun Showunmi.

Showunmi said Atiku has promised not to allow Nigeria experience crisis or violence any reason.

The former vice president, according to the aide, is more interested in institutional reforms that would enhance national development.

Daily Trust reports that Showunmi, who spoke in a media chat in Abuja, however, expressed hope that the tribunal verdict would favour his principal and in line with the professional standards of the judges.

He denied claims by some people that Atiku had the backing of some foreign powers.

“We hope and pray that the cankerworm, nepotism, corruption and lack of integrity that has eaten deep into the fabrics of this society would be caught.

“But it’s up to the courts to demonstrate that they are immune. And I think this election tribunal will do its work.

“People want to know how it will go, and of course, we don’t have a choice, we will accept the verdict of history, we will accept the verdict of the court,” he said.

He said no matter how anyone would look at it, Atiku is already the winner of the 2019 presidential election in the minds of the people.

“Atiku is not going to be silenced with whatever the outcome will be,” he added.

Legit.ng earlier reported how Peter Obi, running mate to Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, May 8, attended an election petition tribunal sitting.

The presidential election tribunal made its first sitting over a petition filed by Atiku Abubakar and others concerning the processes and outcome of the 2019 polls.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari asked the tribunal handling the case of the presidential election filed against his victory by Atiku Abubakar to first determine his preliminary objection seeking to dismiss the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate at the pre-hearing stage.

President Buhari’s lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said the petition was by his client on April 16.
