Updated: Tension in Kano, crowd take over airport in solidarity as Emir Sanusi triumphantly returns from London

Available reports on Sunday, May 12, showed that the Kano airport was taken over by supporters of the embattled emir of the state, Lamido Sanusi, as the monarch returned from London.

Sanusi’s return, according to Premium Times, is described as triumphant in the face of the controversial splitting of his emirate into five by the state government headed by Abdullahi Ganduje.

The report added that hundreds of residents of the state headed to the airport in the afternoon of Sunday, May 12, in solidarity march for the emir.

This, it was learnt, also resulted in tension as there were speculations that the emir’s supporters and sympathizers could turn violent.

The report added that the police was accused of trying to prevent the emir’s supporters, but this was denied by the commissioner of the law enforcement agency in the state, Mohammed Wakili.

Wakil said he did not order restriction on protesters urging that they conduct themselves peacefully.

Daily Trust also reports that the thousands of reporters who welcomed the emir at the airport, followed him to his palace.

Some of the traditional rulers who received the emir include the district head of Wudil , Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim; the district head of Doguwa, Alhaji Aliyu Harazimi, Dan Isan Kano and district head of Warawa, Alhaji Kabiru Tijjani Hashim among others.

Sanusi, Legit.ng understands, was out of the country when his kingdom was split by the passage of a bill by the Kano state House of Assembly and passed by the governor.

The emir reportedly arrived in the night of Saturday, May 10, but landed in Abuja.

Palace sources say he is expected in the state in the evening of Sunday, May 12.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the governor Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, said the responsibility of taking care of the large emirate in Kano by Emir Muhammad Sanusi was too weighty and that this was a reason it was split into five.

The governor described the challenges before Emir Sanusi as “too weighty” adding that the new emirates will also bring development closer to Kano citizens.

Ganduje, who spoke at a ceremony organised by the new emirs to show appreciation for their appointment, said the new law has been gazetted and cannot be reversed.
