OPC urges Buhari to extend new security initiatives to southwest, other regions

- OPC has urged President Buhari to extend new security initiatives to southern part of Nigeria

- The minister of defence, Masur Dan Ali, had said that the government would create local security apparatus in order to fight the increasing spate of insecurity in the north

- Yinka Oguntimehin, the publicity secretary of OPC, however, said that the present security situation has affected the image of the country among the countries of the world

The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), has urged the federal government to as a matter of urgency, extend the new security arrangement initiated recently in the north to the southwest and other parts of the country.

Legit.ng reports that while reacting to the new security measures put in place on Monday, April 29, by the minister for defence, Mansur Dan Ali, the publicity secretary of OPC, Yinka Oguntimehin, in a statement said though the spate of insecurity across the country is increasing by the day, there is need for the federal government to extend the olive branch to the southern regions .

He said the idea of having local security apparatus to work at the grassroots level is one of the content of restructuring and true federalism that is being propagated by Nigerians.

"Let me express my appreciation to the federal government for this initiative, however, it must be stated that insecurity has created a lot of challenges for the entire country. Here in the southwest for instance, we have our peculiar challenges too, but the truth is, whatever good initiative that is being enjoyed in the north should be extended to us here in the south.

''The idea of having local security apparatus to work at the grassroots level is one of the content of restructuring and true federalism that is being propagated by Nigerians.

''Besides, OPC is a group that has endured all situations in the country in the past years and more importantly, we have a history of promoting the interest of the Yoruba race. So, we are ready to support the federal government on issues that have to do with the security of our region and the country as a whole", he said.

Oguntimehin, however, expressed worry over the rising insecurity in the country, saying the present security situation in the country has affected the image of Nigeria among the countries of the world, particularly, in countries like America and Britain.

"I think it is the responsibility of the federal government to ensure the safety of the citizenry, no matter where you live in the country.

''For instance, the scenario that played out in Katsina yesterday, where the District Head of Daura, in Katsina State, Alhaji Musa Umar, was kidnapped by four unidentified gunmen was a sad incident.

''If President Buhari's kinsmen was kidnapped, it shows nobody is safe, so with the new initiative, I think there is need for the government to take urgent and drastic action on the issue", he said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari summoned by the the House of Representatives over the state of insecurity and destruction of property by bandits and kidnappers in most north western states of the country.

The Transitional Phase of African Poetry

The Transitional Phase The second phase, which we have chosen to call transitional, is represented by the poetry of writers like Abioseh Nicol, Gabriel Okara, Kwesi Brew, Dennis Brutus, Lenrie Peters and Joseph Kariuki. This is poetry which is written by people we normally refer to as modem and who may be thought of as belonging to the third phase. The characteristics of this poetry are its competent and articulate use of the received European language, its unforced grasp of Africa’s physical, cultural and socio-political environment and often its lyricism. To distinguish this type of poetry we have to refer back to the concept of appropriation we introduced earlier. At the simplest and basic level, the cultural mandate of possessing a people’s piece of the earth involves a mental and emotional homecoming within the physical environment. Poems like Brew’s ‘‘Dry season”, Okara’s “Call of the River Nun”, Nicol’s “The meaning of Africa” and Soyinka’s “Season”, to give a few examples,
