Lionel Messi nets brace as Barcelona thrash Liverpool in UCL semi-final clash

- Barcelona vs Liverpool saw Luis Suárez score his first goal in this season's UCL against his former employers

- Lionel Messi netted the second goal in the 75th minute of the match and eight minutes later completed his brace to hand Barca a 3-0 advantage

- The reverse fixture of the semi-final clash will hold on Tuesday, May 7 at Anfield

Barcelona hammered Liverpool 3-0 on Wednesday night, May 1, at Camp Nou in a tough Champions League semi-final first leg showdown.

The encounter saw two sides, who are former winners, having lifted the famous trophy five times apiece since 1992-93 campaign.

In the opening minutes of the game, the both sides eager to dictate the pace with good display of football skills, but as the match progressed Liverpool came more into the contest.

However, in the 20th minute, Liverpool suffered a setback after Naby Keita was forced injured after picking up what looks like a groin injury.

In the 24th minute, the midfielder was replaced by Jordan Henderson, with scores still at 0-0.

Two minute later, Jordi Alba delivered a fabulous low ball into Liverpool box for Luis Suarez to slide in beyond Alisson’ reach.

Despite other scoring chances, none of the teams were able to scores, with scores remaining at Barcelona 1-0 Liverpool at the end of the first half.

However, in the second half, Barca upped their games, Liverpool struggling to get into the game.

With 15 minutes of play left, Lionel Messi doubled Barcelona’s lead, with his second goal of the match.

The Argentine was at the end of a Suarez goal effort which crashed against the upright for Messi to tap in.

And with eight minutes left on the clock, Messi completed his brace with a stunning free-kick from about 30-yards out that left Alisson with no chance, to see Barcelona claim a resounding 3-0 win over Liverpool on the night.

The Reds will play host to the Spanish champions in the reverse fixture of the semi-final clash, on Tuesday, May 7 at Anfield.
