Lai Mohammed loses grip on influential Kwara APC chieftains

- Alhaji Lai Mohammed is having a hard time maintaining his status as the political leader of the APC in his home state of Kwara

- The information minister is said to be in danger of totally losing his grip on the APC chieftains in the state and turning into a ceremonial figurehead

- The attitude of the party chieftains is said to be deliberate and rebellion against what many perceive as the minister’s high handedness

A report by ThisDay indicates that the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, is having a hard time maintaining his status as the political leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his home state of Kwara.

According to the report, the situation is so bad that the minister must be wondering just where the rain of disaffection among party faithful began to beat him.

At the current rate, the minister is said to be in danger of totally losing his hold on the state and turning into a ceremonial figurehead with little loyalty.

The report highlighted that the annual Ramadan Lecture organized by the minister in his native Oro, Kwara state was the beginning of the Alhaji Mohammed's declining status as the Kwara APC leader.

On the day of the event which was advertised and proclaimed beforehand with so much fanfare, Alhaji Mohammed was struck with a deadly political blow that resonated throughout the state and beyond.

Top party faithful in the state who were expected to grace the occasion by default were conspicuously absent. Rows of empty seats earmarked for them gave the whole thing a funereal ambience.

The attitude of the party chieftains is said to be deliberate and rebellion against what many perceive as the minister’s high handedness.

To make matters worse, the state chairman of the party, Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa and his wife arrived very late just as the event was wrapping up.

The genesis of the disaffection with Alhaji Mohammed is the rumour he has been picked to return as the sole minister from Kwara in the next dispensation.

The development is said to have not gone down well with party stalwarts, many of whom still regard him as an usurper who rode on the backs of the powers that be to assume the mantle of party leadership in the state.

Others who did not show up at the event organised by the minister includes the incoming governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasak.

Prominent politicians like Arch Lola Ashiru, Senator Ajadi, Ajibola ,Yahaya Oloriegbe, Moshood Mustapha, Cook Gani Olododo, Yinka Aluko amongst others.

Meanwhile, outgoing ministers and state governors elected on the platform of the APC are said to be intensifying their battle of wits to make their way into the next cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari’s first tenure ends at midnight on Tuesday, May 28, the same day all ministers are required to leave office.

But many of them are keen to return, even as some of the outgoing governors who want to move to the federal level are also making political moves to get into the cabinet.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
