Kano: INEC withdraws Buhari aide’s certificate of return, gives minister's son

- INEC has withdrawn Honourable Kawu Sumaila’s certificate of return

- The electoral body took the decision after a Federal High Court in Kano disqualified Sumaila from the House or Reps primary election

- The certificate has now been issued Mohammed Shamsuddeen Dambazau as the House of Representatives member-elect for Sumaila/Takai federal constituency

A report by Daily Trust indicates that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a certificate of return to Mohammed Shamsuddeen Dambazau as the House of Representatives member-elect for Sumaila/Takai federal constituency in Kano state on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

INEC had earlier issued the certificate to AbdulRahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila, a former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari.

But Dambazau, son of the minister of interior, Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, sued INEC, APC and Sumaila, challenging the recognition of Sumaila as the candidate of the party.

He contended that Sumaila never participated in the House of Representatives primary election of the APC.

On Thursday, April 18, a Federal High Court in Kano disqualified Sumaila as the duly elected member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC in the February 23, 2019, general elections.

The court also ordered INEC to recognise Dambazau as the duly elected member representing Sumaila/Takai federal constituency.

Issuing the certificate of return to Dambazau on Monday, May 13, INEC national commissioner, Amina Zakari, said the issuance of the certificate was on the order of the court.

Meanwhile, the senator representing Osun central in the National Assembly, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, has blamed the parliament for failing to address the issue of restructuring.

The lawmaker lamented the fact that the outgoing Eight Assembly could not effectively vote in support of taking the nation on the path of true federalism.

He, however, explained that a lawmaker may have the intention of pushing calls for restructuring, but said it is however subject to a majority vote.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
