Just in: Army takes delivery of weapons, ammunition from Slovakia

The Nigerian Army on Monday, May 20, took delivery of some weapons and ammunition from Slovakia, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport Abuja.

Daily Trust reports that the weapons and ammunition landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 3 pm in a charted Boeing 747-400 cargo plane.

It was gathered that the plane also started offloading the ammunition in what appeared to be hundreds of crates.

Speaking on the delivery of the consignment, the head of Nigerian Army Operation Monitoring Team, Brigadier General Robert Aiyenigba, said this is first in a series of weapons and ammunition set to be delivered to the Nigeria Army.

Aiyenigba told journalists at the airport that the weapons and ammunition coming from Slovakia was procured for the purpose of boosting capabilities of troops fighting insurgency ravaging the north east.

He also said the arms would help the military to curb the banditry in various state across Nigeria.

Aiyenigba said the ammunition was for light weapons, medium weapons, and some heavy weapons in the Nigerian Army inventory.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigerian Army late Tuesday, April 9, gave details of what it called a frustrated attempt by some Boko Haram terrorists to hit at Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state.

The Army said its men actually laid an ambush against the invading terrorists and that this resulted in the death of many of the insurgents while weapons were recovered from the operation.

Many others, according to the Army, escaped with bullet wounds.
