Islamic cleric reportedly detained by DSS in Katsina after criticizing Buhari's govt

- A popular Islamic cleric in Katsina has been reportedly arrested by the DSS

- The cleric was said to have criticized President Muhammadu Buhari's government over the insecurity in the country

- His son, Murtala, has since confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, May 15

A report by Daily Trust indicates that a Katsina-based Islamic cleric, Mallam Aminu Usman, popularly called “Abu Ammar” have been invited and detained by men of State Security Service in Katsina.

Abu Ammar’s arrest on Tuesday, May 14, sources quoted in the report say, might not be unconnected with a pre-“hudba” sermon he made where he berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over nonchalant attitude and worsening insecurity across the country.

According to the report, Abu Ammar was with his friend, Malam Shamsu, when he received a call inviting him by security men who asked him to come down to the Department of State Security (DSS) office in the state.

“He obliged and they went together; after a while, they (DSS) asked Shamsu to leave just at about breaking of fast yesterday,” a source quoted in the report said.

His son, Murtala, has since confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, May 15.

When contacted, the spokesman of Katsina state police command, SP Gambo Isah, said he is hearing the development for the first time

The cleric was said to have been arrested in similar circumstance in March 2015.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has blamed the violence and banditry in the country on embittered politicians who lost in the last general elections.

Buratai said this on Wednesday, May 15, during the visit by three House of Representatives committee at the military’s headquarters of the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri, Borno state.
