Insecurity: Arewa youths protest over incessant killings in Zamfara

- Arewa youths have held a protest in Zamfara, urging government to checkmate the activities of bandits in the state

- The demonstration followed the reported killing of about 50 persons in three local government areas of the state at the weekend

- Adamu Matazu, the president Arewa youths federation, said the protest was to highlight the level of insecurity in the state

Coalition of Northern Nigerian Youths Associations, under the umbrella of Arewa Youths Federation, on Monday, May 6, held a peaceful protest over alleged incessant killings by bandits in Zamfara.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that peaceful rally was held in Gusau the capital of the state. Adamu Matazu, the president Arewa youths federation, said the protest was to highlight the level of insecurity in the state and the entire northwestern zone, so as to elicit positive action to contain it.

Matazu said:”This breach is now extending from killings to targeted abductions that are intended to be high profile; these crimes are also beginning to spill into neighbouring states.

“In spite of the well intended steps so far taken by the federal government and implemented in part by the nation’s security and military services, the situation remained unabated.

“This has confirmed our earlier fears that the criminality is orchestrated by political elites and traditional rulers in some parts of the country.

''The crux of the matter is that these elites are operating illegal gold mines….knowing fully well that the practices violates local and federal laws.

“They are also aware that their activities which thankfully have been stopped by the federal government are detrimental to the state economically, environmentally, security-wise and socially.

“The Arewa Youths Federation hereby calls for an end to killings in Zamfara and the whole of the North West Nigeria.

“Our call is imperative because, we stand by the people of Zamfara, we stand with people of North West Nigeria. We assure that we are not powerless as a people to demand respect for human life in this part of Nigeria and across the country.”

Matazu appealed to law enforcement agencies to step in and clamp down on the gold merchants in the area and step up efforts to track down the supply chain of gold from the area.

He appealed to the federal government not to go back on the ban of illegal gold mining in Zamfara and part of northwest.

Matazu said: “Nigerians are strongly behind President Muhammad Buhari and we will continue to provide the necessary support to security agencies.”

The coalition condemns the abduction of district head of Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar and called on the kidnappers to release him unconditionally.

Recall that Legit.ng reported that armed people suspected to be bandits during the weekend attacked some communities in Zamfara state, killing more than 50 people and injuring 31 in the space of three days.

According to the report, the attackers invaded communities under Dangurgu, Kunkilai, Birnin Magaji, in Maru, Gusau and Birnin Magaji local government areas of Zamfara state.

Buhari’s Legacy Of Recessions By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo ‘Why always Buhari?’ As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari? Is it by the unfortunate hands of kismet that recession hits Nigeria every time Buhari takes charge of the country’s affairs? If the recession of the 80s under Buhari was a conspiracy by economic and political factors, to what do we attribute that of his first coming as a civilian President — and now in his second coming? Why does pestilence scourge the land, hunger ravage the population and lives lost malevolently when Buhari presides over the country? Why always Buhari? Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no President has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari. It is unarguable that the President arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria. Yes, a recession cabinet. Fredrick Nwabufo Here is a cabin...
