Fear trails Imo as over 300 herdsmen invade community, kill 1

- Some herders in the Owerri north local government area have unleashed terror on some persons and killed a Benue indigene

- The herders carried out the ugly acts after they were prevented from forcefully grazing their cattle in the area

- Reporting the tragedy, a Benue native alleged that the herders kill anyone who try to stop them from grazing their cattle

Not less than 300 herdsmen were said to have invaded the Umuorii Uratta community in Owerri north council, Imo state, killing a Benue native and leaving an individual injured.

According to Daily Sun, it all began when the herdsmen made attempts to forcefully graze their cattle in the premises of one Kenityz Plaza in the area.

Prevented by some Benue indigenes to have their way, the herdsmen left the compound only to regroup and unleash terror.

Concerning the activities of the assailants in the state, one Benue indigene alleged that the herders kill anyone who refuses to allow them graze their cattle.

The Benue indigene who identified himself as John said: “They brazenly brandish their guns without any fear of arrest.

"They wanted to force the gate open, but when they were told that the owner of the compound had instructed that he does not want animals in his compound, they regrouped and attack the people, killing one of the occupants. They also injured another person.”

Moreover, Chief Canice Maduji Jr, the national president of Urrata Development Association, has called on security agencies to keep an eye on the activities of the herdsmen in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Antonio Jose Canhandula, had advised the Nigerian government on the best way to tackle the spate of insecurity in the country particularly in the northeast.

The UN scribe in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng on Monday, April 15, at an ECOWAS ambassadors retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, said that the problems of Boko Haram and insecurity in Nigeria are best tackled with increased social and economic inclusion of citizens by the Nigerian government.
