Buhari expected back in Nigeria as 10-day UK private visit ends Sunday, May 5

President Muhammadu Buhari’s 10-day private visit to the United Kingdom will end today, Sunday, May 5.

Hours before the president departed Nigeria for the United Kingdom, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, had released a statement saying Buhari is expected back on May 5.

The statement read: “President Buhari will be proceeding to the United Kingdom on a private visit. He is expected to return to Nigeria on May 5, 2019.

The People Democratic Party (PDP) had criticised President Buhari for leaving Nigeria for a 10-day visit to the United Kingdom without writing the National Assembly to formally transmit power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to act as President before he traveled.

The party in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan who is the publicity secretary of the PDP said the president’s action shows an authoritarian tendency and called on Nigerians to unite to stop this.

The president embarked on a 10-day private visit to the UK on Thursday, April 25. With this visit, the president had spent 227 days out of his four years tenure in the UK.

Previously, Buhari had visited UK for medical reasons. The president was in the UK between February 5 and 10, 2016. In May of same year, he was there for an anti-corruption summit. Also in 2016, the president was in the UK for treatment of an ear infection. He visited from January 19 to March 10, 2017 for medical leave. Two months after he returned, he went back and spent 104 days, from May 8 to August 19.

President Buahri was in the UK in 2018 from April 9 to 21 for his annual leave. In May, he had a technical stopover there. Also between May 8 and 11, the president was in the UK and from August 3-18 as well.
