Yorubas will take over from President Buhari in 2023 - Afenifere faction

- The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) in Ekiti state says the Yoruba nation will produce Nigeria's next president in 2023

- State coordinator Awotiku says while the southwest wants President Buhari to succeed, the region is waiting in the wings to take over from him in 2023

- Awotiku says the ARG will ensure it brings together the Yoruba nation for the achievement of that dream

A faction of the pan-Yoruba organisation Afenifere, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), has said that a Yoruba person would emerge as Nigeria's president in 2023.

Vanguard reports that the Ekiti state chapter of the ARG gave this assurance while speaking with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, the capital city of the southwest state.

The State Coordinator of ARG in Ekiti, Bunmi Awotiku, revealed that the organisation would play a huge role in bringing together the Yoruba nation to make 2023 southwest presidency a reality.

He said: “The South West has been supportive of the policies and programmes of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and we shall continue to do so. We want him to succeed and he shall succeed by God’s grace.

“We would come to the round table and I can assure you that Yoruba would forge a common front this time around. We have learned our lessons as a people and we won’t allow internal fight or acrimony to deprive us this great opportunity like the presidency.”

The submission of the ARG is however contrary to that of Chief Ebenezer Babatope, a former minister of transport, who claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will still field another northerner in the 2023 presidential election which is four years away.

Legit.ng wrote that Babatope said on Sunday, April 14, the south-west zone of APC would be fooling itself if it believed the party’s national leadership would zone the presidency to the region in 2023.

He said the north would find it difficult to relinquish power after the end of the Muhammadu Buhari presidency in 2023.
