- Festus Akande, a spokesperson for the Supreme Court describes the report is false and intended to cause mischief
The Supreme Court has described as false report that judges in the apex court are divided over the voluntary retirement of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.
The apex court in a statement on Monday, April 8, through its director of press and information, Festus Akande, said the report suggesting that there was division in the Supreme Court is misleading in its entirety, The New Telegraph reports.

The spokesperson for the Supreme Court stated that there was no iota of truth in the report, which he said was intended to cause mischief
"The Supreme Court of Nigeria is one big, indivisible judicial family that is not, in any way, governed by religious, tribal or parochial influence or sentiments. The Judicial oath taken by all the justices of the court has already initiated a potent sacred bond to regulate and conscientise the conducts of their lordships in the discharge of their judicial functions," Akande said.

He said no judicial officer is appointed on account of religious or tribal affiliation, noting that discharge of judicial obligations cannot be dictated by such extraneous considerations.
"The Supreme Court justices and the entire management are united, cohesive and indivisible in the quest to move the court to an enviable height,” he said.
In another report, a group has accused the immediate past chief justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, of battering Nigeria's judiciary before resigning his position.
The Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative (CGGCI) said Onnoghen's resignation is an insult to Nigerian judiciary.
Speaking on Monday, April 8, the national coordinator of CGGCI, Okpokwu Ogenyi, said Onnoghen's resignation was indeed shameful as well as infamous because his actions have brought international embarrassment to the country.
