Today in History, April 18: Albert Einstein died of heart failure, cremated not long after

On Monday, April 18, 1955, Albeit Einstein, a German-born theoretical physicist, died of heart failure at the age of 76.

He developed the theory of relativity, one of the two very significant pillars of modern physics together with quantum mechanics.

Einstein's work is also known to have great influence on the understanding of science, especially for his mass-energy equivalence formula which was said to be the most famous equation.

The popular scientist was born in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the German Empire, on 14 March 1879.

He also has a great love for music that he was once said to have written in his journal that: "If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music... I get most joy in life out of music."

Einstein’s funeral and cremation rites were very private affairs as only one photographer from LIFE magazine with the name Ralph Morse was allowed to cover the event in pictures.

It is interesting to note that the pictures taken at the event were never published because the son of Einstein made the request.

The pictures remained unpublished for more than five decades in the magazine’s archive.

It should be noted that Einstein would have been 96 today if he were alive. He died at the Princeton Hospital.

Moments after the 20th century icon died in the hospital, he was moved to Princeton in his home for the preparation of his funeral rites.

Morse, on hearing about the death of Einstein, drove first to the hospital and then Einstein’s home to capture the last moments surrounding the icon’s life.

The simple casket containing the remains of Einstein only stayed at the funeral home for just an hour before it was put on a hearse.

The pictures from the funeral ceremony were also asked not to be published and the photographer had to again shelve his publication.
