There is nothing stopping implementation of new minimum wage - FG clarifies

- The federal government says there is no further action that needs to be done before the new minimum wage is implemented

- According to the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, there is nothing stopping governments, ministries, departments and agencies from implementing it

- Malami says since the president has assented to the minimum wage bill, there is nothing stopping the implementation

The federal government has said there is no hurdle delaying state governments, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) from implementing the new minimum wage of N30,000 since President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the minimum wage bill.

The clarification was made on Saturday, April 27, by the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, Vanguard reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Malami said that there was no other requirement on the part of the government for the commencement of the payment of the new wage.

He said: “The incidence, operation and application of a law is automatic unless otherwise stated by its commencement provision. The new minimum wage law is automatic and envisages no further action on the part of the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation, not having been so mandated by the enabling law.

“Bureaucratic processes are not rooted in the action or inaction of the Attorney General, legal obligation having arisen by the commencement of the law upon assent by the President.

"Ministries, Departments and agencies of government are automatically expected to execute their own side of statutory obligations in giving effect to the law that has taken effect and remains applicable, valid and subsisting. This is a law the application of which commences upon assent by the President.

Legit.ng previously reported that there are fears that the implementation of the new national minimum wage bill recently signed into law may be delayed following reports that the attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, was yet to forward the new minimum wage Act to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) for speedy implementation.

President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new national minimum wage bill into law recently after months of negotiations between the federal government and labour unions in the country.
