Onnoghen's resignation: Let's praise government, they know what they're doing - SAN

- Chief Robert Clarke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has said that the federal government should be lauded for taking Walter Onnoghen to court

- Clarke said that there the government know more than the citizens and should always be trusted with their actions

- The senior lawyer also said Onnoghen should have resigned a long time ago but he did not because his trial was politicized

Chief Robert Clarke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has said that the federal government should be praised for the decision to take the Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to a tribunal.

The senior advocate in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, April 6, said the government knew what they were doing when they took the CJN to court.

Clarke said there are so many things the government does that are not common knowledge to the citizens because they know more than everybody, adding that the government should rather be given credit.

“The government has knowledge of many things which you and I don’t have, so if the government decided to go and take the head of the judiciary to a tribunal, give them credit that they know what they were doing,” he said.

The senior lawyer also commented more on the resignation of Onnoghen, saying that a petition by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and not the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) caused that.

He added: “What has created the situation that he (the CJN) has found himself today is the petition written by EFCC. That petition, he had a copy of it in February.

“As at February, the CJN was aware of those charges labeled against him.”

He also said that the CJN should not have waited that long to resign since he had the petition since Febraury, saying the politicization of the whole issue stopped Onnoghen from doing the right thing.”

Clarke said that the best thing for President Muhammadu Buhari to do is to accept the CJN’s resignation as failure to do so will only create another mess that will heat up the polity more.

“Let me be honest with you, we should not allow the politics or the political climate to be overheated. I will advise Buhari as President of Nigeria to accept the resignation because if he does not do so, he is creating another heatwave in the politics of the country,” he said.
